Sexual health is for every body 💙
That means everybody deserves real access to it too. PrEP is a highly effective way to prevent HIV, alongside options like condoms, but only if people can actually reach them and stay in care. Our research shows that men and trans people who have s*x with men with a migrant background, face major barriers to PrEP care in Belgium. So we’re testing something new: community-led outreach, peer navigators and lower thresholds to start care, inspired by models from low- and middle-income countries. Because equal access isn’t optional. 💙

Isabel Brosius is one of our infectious disease specialists, and has researched multiple mpox outbreaks. 🦠 In 2022, she investigated the outbreak in Belgium and served as one of the advisers on the national risk assessment group. In 2023, she studied the outbreak in the DRC, when hundreds of people suddenly got sick in the eastern part of the country.

Thanks to her work, we understand mpox a lot better and can predict the spread and risks of the virus better as well. We are proud to share that Isabel is one of five laureates up for the EOS Pipet Award 2026! 🏆 It's a prize that honours a young researcher that has made a significant contribution to scientific research.

💚 Een gesprek over zijn testament begon voor collega Gert Van der Auwera na enkele aangrijpende gebeurtenissen. 🤝 Research that saves lives doesn't start the day a crisis hits. It starts years earlier, with trust, training and funding. Last week we welcomed François Moureau, incoming Head of Cooperation at the Embassy of Belgium in Kinshasa, to see some of that work firsthand: Ebola and malaria research, travel medicine, HIV and STI care, and our plans for the years ahead.

It was also a moment to reflect on the long standing cooperation between ITM, the Embassy and Diplomatie.Belgium, support that has helped strengthen institutions and sustain research and training in the DRC for years.
