๐ŸŒ Infectious diseases don't respect borders, and neither should the research that studies them.

Ahead of the 66th ITM Colloquium, scientific leads Johan van Griensven (ITM Antwerp) and Endalamaw Gadisa (AHRI Addis Ababa) discuss why mobility is central to infectious disease research and why solutions start with collaboration across disciplines.

Big news from our alumni community ๐ŸŽ‰

Three ITM graduates were just awarded the Global Research Award of the Province of Antwerp. Their research spans healthcare access for migrants, safer treatment for a neglected tropical disease and the genetic detective work behind anthrax outbreaks. Proof that global health challenges need every angle of expertise.

Join us in congratulating Mohamed, Barbora and Anna-Leigh in the comments. ๐Ÿ‘

๐ŸŽฌ New film: why global health funding protects us all.

โ€œAn infectious disease anywhere is an infectious disease everywhereโ€

From the Ebola outbreak in Central Africa to the resurgence of drug-resistant TB in Europe, experts from the Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp โ€” Gorik Ooms, Bouke de Jong, Mwelwa Phiri and Deogratias Katsuva Sibongwere โ€” show how weakening global health systems anywhere makes all of us less safe.

The evidence points to a simple conclusion: there is no European health security without investment in global health.

๐Ÿ† Isabel Brosius has won the Eos Pipet 2026 jury prize!

The jury honoured her for her scientific leadership and societal engagement in mpox research.

When a new mpox variant emerged in eastern DR Congo, Isabel worked with Congolese partners and ITM colleagues to set up a centre for diagnosis, treatment and research. Their work has helped outbreak response and preparedness worldwide.

๐Ÿ‘ Congratulate Isabel in the comments. Congratulations also to fellow laureates Teun Everts, Mustafa KarataลŸ, Melissa Schuring and Jelle Vandersnickt.

Meet Dr Amani Kikula, an obstetrician-gynaecologist from Tanzania whose PhD research on gestational diabetes screening is now shaping his country's national antenatal care guidelines. With support of a DGD PhD Scholarship, he built the skills and network that could help him turn his research into real change.

Sexual health is for every body ๐Ÿ’™
That means everybody deserves real access to it too. PrEP is a highly effective way to prevent HIV, alongside options like condoms, but only if people can actually reach them and stay in care. Our research shows that men and trans people who have s*x with men with a migrant background, face major barriers to PrEP care in Belgium. So weโ€™re testing something new: community-led outreach, peer navigators and lower thresholds to start care, inspired by models from low- and middle-income countries. Because equal access isnโ€™t optional. ๐Ÿ’™
