When research starts by listening, the priorities change.

A new Mi-CARE study published in JAMA brings the voices of migrant families, young people, frontline clinicians, and “double experts” into the centre of paediatric migrant health research in Europe.

Initiated within the EAP REACH Strategic Advisory Group, the study asked those closest to the issue what research is most urgently needed to improve healthcare for children and adolescents with migration experience.

Key takeaways:

Migrant families, former migrant children and adolescents, clinicians, and “double experts” helped define the research priorities.

The priorities point to real barriers children and families face, including access to healthcare, racism and discrimination, language support, vulnerable groups, healthcare worker training, and family involvement.

Mi-CARE offers a roadmap for more inclusive, relevant, and action-oriented paediatric migrant health research in Europe.

More than a list of research priorities, Mi-CARE is a call to listen better, research more inclusively, and ensure that migrant children, families, and clinicians help shape what comes next.
