Today, June 5, is HIV Long-Term Survivors Awareness Day

A moment to recognise long-term and lifetime survivors and the knowledge, care and leadership they have carried across decades of the response.

In March 2026, we convened the Long-Term Survivors of HIV Summit in Sitges, Spain, bringing together participants from Europe, the USA and Canada. The Summit created a space for participant-led storytelling, ensuring our lived experience continues to guide remembrance as well as current and future fights for quality of life, access to care and treatment and a stigma-free life.

The Summit was an opportunity for people who have lived through decades of the epidemic to learn from one another, discuss ongoing challenges, and help build a shared “Legacy Chest,” a digital audiovisual collection of survivor stories intended to educate, inspire, and support advocacy for years to come.

Europe’s future depends on the health of its people.

More than 490 healthcare experts, scientists, academics, and patient advocates have sent a joint letter to EU leaders and national governments.

The message is simple. The EU’s next long-term budget must reflect what citizens actually need, and that means putting health at the centre of negotiations.

The European Parliament has already taken a strong position. Now member states must decide whether they will do the same.

EATG is proud to be a signatory of the letter.

EATG is publishing a community-led report on the implementation of HIV combination prevention in Italy, Armenia, Sweden, Slovenia, Ireland, Croatia, Turkey and Spain. Community-based organisations in these countries applied the SCOPE HIV Combination Prevention Checklist to assess both their own services and the broader national environment affecting key populations.

***Key Recommendations***

Across all countries, there is a clear disconnection between formal commitments on HIV and SRHR and the lived realities of key populations. ⚠️🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

Reform laws and policies: ⚖️ Decriminalise s*x work and drug use, adopt human rights-based harm reduction and strengthen anti-discrimination protections, including SOGIESC protections and legal gender recognition based on self-determination. 🛡️🫂

Turn formal availability into real access: 🚪 Decentralise SRHR and HIV services, reduce waiting times, offer anonymous or low-threshold access and remove administrative exclusions from PrEP, PEP and core SRHR care. ❤️💊

Make community-led services part of the system: 🤝 Create stable, multi-year public funding for community-based testing, peer support and harm reduction, and embed NGOs in national strategies and referral systems. 🌱🏘️

Build social protection into HIV care: 🧠 Include mental health, psychosocial, legal and anti-violence support as standard components of HIV prevention and treatment. 🛟⚕️

Improve quality through rights-based, community-driven care: 📚 Ensure mandatory provider training on human rights, stigma, gender diversity and cultural competence, with services co-designed and delivered with community organisations. 👥

Read the report:

In the Materials section, readers will find the survey questions, which are provided as a blueprint for future peer research and offer a structured framework for study design and methodology. Although no further data will be collected using these questions, we hope they will serve as a starting poin...

Yesterday at the conference taking place in Catania, EATG's Chair Daniela Rojas Castro chaired the memorial lecture dedicated to the memory and legacy of Giulio Maria Corbelli -EATG member, activist, treatment advocate, community leader, and dear friend.

The session honoured Giulio’s lasting contribution to EATG and to the HIV response: from leading our European Community Advisory Board (ECAB) and HIV cure work, to advancing community-led testing and care through the first Checkpoints in Italy.

Through contributions from EATG member Filippo von Schloesser and Salvio Cecere, two generations of activism came into dialogue, connecting the history of the fight for treatment access with reflections on where the HIV response stands today and where it needs to go next.

The session reminded us that the history of HIV activism is part of the science itself, and that our work remains an invitation to keep building, questioning, and moving forward.

EATG is proud to support the Coalition for a European HIV Response (C4EHR) Joint Statement.

Europe’s Unfinished Epidemics: Sustaining Community-Led HIV Response in Times of Crisis highlights a critical turning point: while the tools to end HIV exist, political commitment and funding for community-led responses are weakening, putting progress at risk. Europe remains off track on key targets, with rising infections, preventable deaths, and widening inequalities.

We call on the European Parliament, the European Commission, and Member States to take urgent action to safeguard and strengthen Europe’s HIV response through sustained political commitment, together with ongoing and predictable funding for community-led action.

The call is clear: renewed EU action, sustainable funding, and stronger leadership are urgently needed.

Already endorsed by 100+ organisations and 200+ individuals: add your voice and help strengthen the response.

At the beginning of March, within the SCOPE project, we had the privilege to attend the International *x conference in Antwerp, Belgium. It was hosted by the Institute of Tropical Medicine, and the speakers were not just academics and clinicians: the floor was given to community members too.

The collaboration between institutions and community was so strong and clear that the conference organised a guided visit to , one of the most famous fe**sh fairs in the world that was happening in Antwerp in those days. Darklands created a special booth on kinky responsibility to inform attendees about HIV combination preventions, chems*x and harm reduction.

"If we want to prevent chems*x from becoming a problem, we need to build safer spaces where no one feels the pressure to perform. A place where you are enough to not be enough."
Marco Stizioli

"The most inspiring aspect of the conference was the sense of shared commitment among those present"
Michał Muskała
