🇬🇧 Art therapy is sometimes thought to be mainly for people who already enjoy creating or who find it difficult to put their experiences into words. However, people may consult an art therapist for many different reasons, often similar to those that might lead them to see a psychologist or psychotherapist.
In art therapy, creating is not simply an activity that can make you feel good: it is part of a therapeutic process and relationship, supported by a trained professional.
Images, colours, materials and gestures offer an additional way of exploring what you are experiencing, whether words come easily or are more difficult to find. Creating also engages sensations, movement, images and associations. This can bring forward elements that may not emerge in the same way through an exclusively verbal exchange.
What you create does not need to be beautiful or successful: it becomes a way to feel, express, observe and reflect, at your own pace.
People may seek support to recognise their emotions more clearly, navigate a period of change, explore their identity or relationships, understand certain patterns, reconnect with their sensations, gain perspective, explore their relationship with control and perfectionism or find a therapeutic approach that does not rely exclusively on talking.
Are you wondering whether art therapy might be right for you? I offer individual sessions in Saint-Gilles (Brussels) in French, Dutch and English.
