Studio WOOW - Theming expert

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to create this unique design for the Italian restaurant at Plopsa Station Antwerp.

Although the park has sadly since closed its doors, the project remains, for me, a perfect example of the power of themed entertainment design.
After all, a park restaurant is so much more than just a place to eat. It is an extension of the park’s magic.
It’s about immersing visitors in a unique, unforgettable experience.
At Mr. Spaghetti, everything came together: Decor, atmosphere, music and, of course… delicious Italian food!
Designing this restaurant was a fantastic challenge.
It reminds me why I love this work so much: creating places where young and old alike can escape reality for a while.

As theme park designers, we spend months — sometimes years — perfecting the storyline of a new attraction. The queue, the pre-show, the ride system, the soundtrack: everything is meticulously crafted to immerse the guest in another world.
But what happens when that same guest leaves the attraction, still buzzing with adrenaline, and gets hungry?

Too often, you see this happen: a beautifully themed zone, with an impersonal food unit slapped right in the middle of it. The illusion? Instantly broken. ❌

An F&B location is not a necessary evil that should be purely functional. It is an extension of the attraction and the storyline, keeping the overall experience alive! In the attached concept design, I want to show how we can prevent this break in immersion.

By visually and narratively weaving the F&B point into the surrounding attraction.

Could a Disney shop become a Primark? 🏰✨

As a Theme Park Concept Designer, I’m closely following the discussions about the renewed, strikingly minimalist souvenir shop at Disneyland Paris.
Fans’ reactions have been critical: “Sterile” and “the magic is gone”.

Is a minimalist shop with beige walls the future of theme park retail?
My answer as a designer is a resounding: NO!

I’ve already highlighted in previous posts just how important it is to theme a merchandise shop.
People stay longer in spaces that fill them with wonder. Efficiency and modernisation must never come at the expense of storytelling.

Of course, shops need to run smoothly from an operational point of view.
But if we strip away the soul and the details, we lose precisely what makes our profession so unique: total immersion.

Should theme park shops be purely functional and minimalist for the sake of shopping convenience, or should they continue to enchant us?

A mechanical ride only becomes magical when the visitor knows why they’re getting on it. 🎢✨
As a designer, I help theme parks and leisure venues pull visitors into an unforgettable story long before the ride even begins.
The façade and the pre-show are crucial in this regard:
• The façade attracts visitors and immediately shuts out the outside world.
• The pre-show transforms the queue from ‘wasted time’ into a spectacular introduction to the adventure.

The result? Higher guest satisfaction, a more intense ride experience and a shorter perceived waiting time.
Here’s a glimpse of one of my designs, in which atmosphere and experience take centre stage even before the visitor enters the attraction.

A while ago, I designed this lovely Smurf suite.
Because the magic of an amusement park doesn’t have to end as soon as the gates close.
In today’s market for overnight leisure, the hotel room is the ultimate extension of the attraction. Guests are seeking total immersion. They don’t just want to sleep; they want to wake up inside the story. Extending the guest journey with themed suites like this leads to higher occupancy rates, stronger brand loyalty and an unforgettable overall experience.

As an themepark designer, I help parks and resorts take this step. From the initial concept sketch to the complete theming of the space. What do you think of this concept?
