Pilot Card – Basic Things To Know ✅⚓️

A Pilot Card is a shipboard document that provides the marine pilot with essential information about the vessel before and during pilotage. It helps the pilot understand the ship’s characteristics and maneuvering capabilities, allowing safe navigation in confined waters, ports, rivers, and channels.

Typical contents of a Pilot Card include:

* Vessel particulars – Name, IMO number, length overall (LOA), beam, draft, air draft, gross tonnage, and deadweight.
* Maneuvering information – Turning circle, stopping distance, crash stop data, and maneuvering characteristics.
* Propulsion details – Type of main engine, propeller (fixed or controllable pitch), rudder type, bow/stern thrusters, and engine response time.
* Navigation and communication – Gyro compass error, VHF channels, bridge equipment, and pilot boarding arrangements.
* Anchoring information – Anchor type, cable length, and windlass details.
* Operational limitations – Maximum permissible speed, under-keel clearance requirements, bridge visibility, and any special restrictions.

Importance:
The Pilot Card enables effective communication between the Master and Pilot, supports safe pilotage, reduces the risk of navigational accidents, and complies with SOLAS recommendations for bridge team management. It is a key document used during the Master–Pilot Information Exchange before commencing pilotage.
