Today is World Occupational Therapy Day, and this year's theme is Participation Matters.

That's the heart of OT. For people of every age, it's about more than building skills. It's about being able to take part in the moments that matter: going to work, getting out in the community, caring for family, living independently at home.

In my practice, I see this every day with children. Participation for them looks like playing with friends, joining in at school and enjoying family celebrations.

As the owner of Bright Futures Occupational Therapy and Vice President of the Occupational Therapy Association of The Bahamas, I'm proud to be part of a profession that helps make that possible. Thank you to my fellow OTs in The Bahamas who do this work every day, with children and adults alike.

What a way to start the week! ☀️

This morning, Phillippa Rolle and I, President and Vice President of the Occupational Therapy Association of The Bahamas (OTAB), joined Bahamas At Sunrise to talk about occupational therapy (OT), just ahead of World Occupational Therapy Day tomorrow.

We talked about what OT is, who we help (from babies to older adults), the signs that someone might benefit, and how to access OT here in The Bahamas.

The message I want every parent to hear: if everyday tasks have become a battle for your child, you don't need to wait for a diagnosis to speak to an OT.

And to any young Bahamian thinking about a career helping people: with only 11 licensed OTs in the whole country, we need you. 💛

Thank you to the Bahamas At Sunrise team for having us, to Phillippa for doing this with me and to our amazing colleagues for making this segment possible. Happy (almost) World OT Day!

Thanks for all your answers on Friday! Here's the breakdown.

The biggest difference is control. A tantrum is a behaviour with a purpose. A meltdown happens when the brain has had more input than it can handle, and the child needs help to calm down, not consequences.

If meltdowns are happening often, an OT can look at your child's sensory needs and build a plan that works at home and at school.

Comment SENSORY for my toolkit of everyday calming strategies.

Ready to Learn: Staff Training 🧠✏️

When a child struggles to hold a pencil, open a lunch container, or stay seated for writing, the difficulty usually isn’t the task itself. It’s further down the foundation.

This week I shared the fine motor “pyramid” with an amazing team of educators:
🔹 Core and shoulder stability
🔹 Hand strength
🔹 Grasp and finger control
🔹 Pre-writing and tool use
🔹 Everyday skills

Build from the bottom up, and the top gets easier.
We didn’t just talk about it. Staff got hands-on with simple, low-cost activities they can bring straight into the classroom.

I’m so grateful to every school and organisation that makes space for OT in the conversation. 💚
📚 Ready to Learn training is available for schools, preschools, and centres, tailored to your staff and students.

They can look exactly the same from the outside: crying, shouting, throwing themselves on the floor. But what's happening underneath is very different, and so is what helps.

What do you think the difference is? Drop your answer below. I'll share the full breakdown on Monday.

October is a month of celebrating occupational therapy across the Caribbean and around the world, leading up to World OT Day on 27 October. It's the perfect time to answer the question I hear most: "So what do you actually do?"

In short, I help children do the everyday things they need and want to do, with more confidence and independence. Sometimes that's holding a pencil. Sometimes it's coping with a noisy classroom. Sometimes it's getting dressed without a battle every morning.

Know someone who's always wondered what OT is? Share this with them. And if you have questions about your own child, comment OT.

Occupational therapy isn't just about jobs. For children, their "occupations" are playing, learning, getting dressed, eating and making friends. When those everyday things are harder than they should be, OT helps find out why and builds the skills to make life easier for the whole family.

Does any of this sound like your child? Comment OT and I'll send you information on how to book a virtual consultation.
