According to recent statistics, I just created stress in 100% of the people who read the 6 trigger words above. We all stress, it’s ever present in your life. But what do we DO about it? A great quote says it like this… “People are disturbed not by a thing, but by their perception of a thing.” — Epictetus.
What if I told you there was a systematic review of 8 independent double blind and randomized studies proving that 1 single compound could give you an average of 28% reduction in plasma cortisol along with 5 showing significant reductions in rating scales for anxiety and depression? This compound has to be a medication, right? This compound has to be covered by insurance, right? And finally, every physician in America should be telling patients about it, right? WRONG, on all 3. This compound has been around for over 2000 years and research shows the results although it still doesn’t understand the mechanism of action.
“The smell of a horse” otherwise know as Ashwagandha or Withania Somnifera has long been one of the top tools for improving stress across the globe. No, it doesn’t take stress triggers away, but this amazing compound paired with things like physiological sigh, sunlight exposure, grounding, exercise, and many others can be a starting point to push you through inevitable difficulties that undoubtably come your way.

4 different studies… same result. Grip strength is directly tied to mortality rates. Stronger grip strength means longer life.

Lower grip strength is associated with more risk of onset of cognitive decline and dementia despite

Grip strength was a more powerful predictor of cardiovascular mortality than systolic blood pressure. They also found grip strength to be associated with all-cause mortality, myocardial infarction, and stroke

Inflammatory and hormonal pathway and brain atrophy might be the explanation for the association between sarcopenia and cognitive impairment

handgrip strength and muscle weakness are strongly associated with an increased risk of all-cause and premature mortality in healthy middle-aged and older adults.

Reward Prediction Error
The same brain pathways that have gotten people addicted to casinos and gambling has now become even more present in rewarded social stimuli. Although the dopamine release isn’t as large as co***ne (yes, co***ne also the same pleasure response), things such as a positive emoji, an encouraging response, increasing tags or views, and even new followers release enough dopamine to create an addiction. As a result, the negative prediction error causes a dramatic drop in dopamine-driven pathways over time. In a world where we see depression and su***de at alarming rates, we need to learn to limit our dopamine-driven desire for social validation. Instead, focus on real, sustainable and authentic dopamine release.

Get addicted to real dopamine:
Cold plunges, sunrises, long hikes, snowboarding, nourishing your body, animals, healthy relationships, quality sleep, consistent routines, gratitude, slow mornings, music, working hard at something, and daily walks. ***depreventionmonth

Sleep and Fat Loss:

More and more research is showing that SLEEP is one of the best tools for a healthy body composition. And most importantly, adequate protein intake is imperative for recovery while sleep. Moral of the story… if you don’t eat enough protein, and get enough sleep, it doesn’t matter how much effort you put into the gym, you will either not lose weight, or the weight you do lose is muscle causing a higher fat to protein ratio making you skinny-fat. Extra nugget, alcohol before sleep ruins sleep quality and absorption of proteins.

If you’re waking up early to do your workout after only 4-6 hours of sleep, you’re stepping over diamonds to pick up silver.

Tick Bites:
Donuts with Dad was a bit different this morning. It quickly became medic kit/triage in truck with Dad. Tick bites have been increasingly common in our area as of late. It’s the perfect time of year right now as well. L had a tick on her back that didn’t want to come out. Once removed, the mouth parts were still embedded. Be on the lookout for ticks in the home/on your family especially if you’re near a field or have household furry family members. Few tips:
1. Now is time of year for increased ticks and tick bites
2. When removing tick, DO NOT squeeze or crush the tick body.
3. Check to see if mouth parts were left behind. If so, DO NOT leave them in due to increased risk of infection. Use tweezers to remove or schedule visit with doctor to remove
4. Flush out area, apply antiseptic wipes and cream. For crunchy people like us, ACV works great as well.
5. Monitor area/person for 72-96 hours for rash, infection, fever, hives, wheezing, swelling, diarrhea, cramping, and flulike symptoms
6. Always keep some kind of first-aid or medic kit with you.
7. Always keep tick if possible for doctor to identify and treat properly if symptoms develop.
8. Although Lymes isn’t very popular in Texas, there are 4 main types of ticks and there are multiple conditions that are common and must monitor/treat early.
Top supplements:
1. Topical andrographis and bentonite clay mixture
2. Echinacea tea
3. Vitamin D3
4. High dose fish oil
5. Probiotic
6. Japanese knotwood

As always, call your doctor for treatments and if medications are the right call. Never forget DIET is our biggest weapon against EVERYTHING. Eat healthy and eat often

🇺🇸💪💯💀Hyrox Worlds quickly became the race I needed, not the one I trained for. You train for months/years to compete against the most savagely athletic people on the world with a partner that would die for you. 15 minutes in, pacing at the time we were aiming at… s**t happened. Collision at the Rox Zone changed the race.
At that point, I had the decision to call it quits and get help off the course… or go to my hurt locker and grit it out. For me, stopping instantly wasn’t an option.
There was so much to unpack about my thoughts the rest of that race. The running 4 miles on a torn ligament, doing 6 events on one leg, watching my partner take as much on his shoulders that he could, hearing the last words Lennon told me over the phone “daddy I love you, don’t stop trying”, and readjusting the game plan on the fly.
, you’re a total beast and you picked up the slack like a champion. You have more respect from me than I can say. I learned something about myself on that course that only competing can bring. I don’t know what 23/24 season is going to look like, but it ain’t over baby.

“It’s not what you achieve, it’s what you overcome”. - Carlton Fisk

“Once you learn to quit, it becomes a habit” - Vince Lombardi

Life in the Lane

For quite a few years, I was a competitive swimmer and still love it as my favorite form of cardio and therapy. As I sit here and reflect on the days ahead of me, I can’t help but to think about the swimming lane being a representation of life.

The thousands of ripples coming across the water represent our hurdles in life, ever-present with the sole intention of pulling us from our purpose. The line at the bottom of the pool represents the timeline of life. It’s dark, strong, and continuous, only to be seen if we open our eyes to be present in the journey. The hard stop at the end of the line represents where our physical life here is done, coming out as a regenerated soul with the Lord in glory.

The flags waving above the water represent the unceasing noise that comes into our head — always present but easy to drown out with genuine character and purpose. The leaves at the bottom represent our failures that we let sink in order to keep pushing forward. We see them whither with time as we become stronger.

The bite of the chilly water as we hop in is our immediate, primitive reflex to bail before the work even begins. We blame outside stimuli for a lack of fortitude within. Can you learn to beat your mind in the deepest and coldest waters?

Lastly, the reflection coming out of the lane staring back at you: do you like what you see? Do you love yourself? Do you even know who that person is anymore? Whether we realize it or not, life is a constant series of decisions — we either make the right moves, or course-correct after making the wrong ones.

Do you stay in your lane? Do you dare to fight your own battle? Or do you hop in somebody else’s lane? You try to live their life, leaving yours a blank canvas of unopposed waves. Life is in those waves. Big and small, time and time again, it’s the wake we create as we deliberately struggle that leaves our mark on the world. 💣
