‎We are pleased to announce that Spirometry services are now available at Central Regional Referral Hospital.

‎Spirometry is a simple, safe, and non-invasive lung function test that measures how well your lungs are working. It plays an important role in the diagnosis and monitoring of respiratory conditions such as:

‎✅ Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
‎✅ Chronic cough and breathlessness
‎✅ Other lung diseases

‎If you have persistent cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, or have been referred by your doctor for a lung function assessment, you are welcome to avail this service.

‎This service has been established following the successful 𝐁𝐡𝐮𝐭𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, conducted by the Health and Medical Research Centre (HMRC), Central Regional Referral Hospital. As part of the survey, healthcare professionals were trained as Spirometry Technicians, while doctors also received training in the interpretation of spirometry results. This capacity-building initiative has enabled CRRH to provide quality spirometry services for the diagnosis and management of chronic respiratory diseases.

‎Early detection and regular monitoring of lung health can lead to better treatment outcomes. We encourage individuals with respiratory symptoms or those referred by the doctors to make use of this service.

‎On 28 July 2026, the Central Regional Referral Hospital (CRRH) held an official welcoming ceremony for three newly appointed contract Staff Nurses and four in-service Staff Nurses who rejoined the hospital after completing their Bachelor of Science in Nursing (LTT) at the Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan.

‎The hospital management congratulates the returning nurses on their academic achievement and warmly welcomes the newly appointed nurses as they begin their professional journey at CRRH. The hospital wishes all seven nurses every success as they serve patients and the community with compassion, professionalism, and dedication.

‎This is to inform the service users of CRRH that Dr Sangay Wangchuk, Medical Specialist, is now transferred to Gidakom Hospital starting July 2026.
‎
‎Dr Sangay Wangchuk completed MBBS from University of Peradeniya in 2014, MD Internal Medicine from Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan in 2020 and Fellowship in Clinical and TB Control from Fukujuju Hospital in Japan in 2023.
‎
‎During his tenure in CRRH for past six years, he led the Medicine Department as the lone medical specialist for two years before the current specialists joined the hospital. Dr Sangay Wangchuk actively engaged in COVID-19 management and the Antimicrobial Stewardship Programme. He served as adjunct faculty teaching intern doctors and postgraduate residents. He published several research articles and book chapters on antimicrobial use and stewardship.

‎While his departure is a loss to the hospital in terms of his expertise and manpower, the Hospital Administration and staff sincerely thank him for his outstanding service and invaluable contributions to CRRH and wish him good health and continued success at the Royal Centre for Infectious Diseases (RCID), Gidakom.

‎With this departure, CRRH now has two medical specialists serving the population and the referral catchment areas.

‎Today, CRRH conducted its 8th edition of CRRH Lecture Series for the Advancement of Clinical Skills (CLASS) on "Epidemiology and Clinical Management of Malaria in Bhutan."

‎We were honored to welcome Mr. Tobgyel, Program Analyst, Vector-borne Disease Control Programme (VDCP), Gelephu, as our guest resource person. He shared Bhutan's inspiring malaria elimination journey—from thousands of cases decades ago to achieving zero indigenous malaria transmission since 2021—and highlighted the country's ongoing efforts toward WHO malaria-free certification in 2026.

‎The clinical management of malaria was delivered by Dr. Thinley Dorji, Medical Specialist, CRRH, who provided an excellent overview of malaria diagnosis, treatment protocols, and the management of severe malaria based on the National Malaria Treatment Guideline 2024.
‎
‎The session was attended by around 30 participants in person and more than 80 online participants from across Bhutan, demonstrating the continued commitment of healthcare professionals to acquire knowledge and skills to improve patient care.

‎Central Regional Referral Hospital today held a promotion ceremony for 30 civil servants who have reached their next career milestone.
‎
‎The ceremony began with a prayer and butter lamp offering for the continued welfare and longevity of the promotees. The Medical Superintendent, along with hospital administration and department incharges, then presented promotion orders and 𝑘ℎ𝑎𝑑𝑎𝑟 to each promotee, acknowledging their dedication and contribution to the hospital.

‎The promotees included one Specialist Doctor (Doctor's Career Path) and 29 civil servants receiving broadband promotions.

𝐇𝐌𝐑𝐂 𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐲

The Health and Medical Research Centre (HMRC) was established on 19 July 2025 as a collaborative research excellence centre of the Central Regional Referral Hospital (CRRH) and the Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan (KGUMSB). Its primary objective is to promote a culture of health research among workers at the hospital. The initial funding for the establishment of this centre was provided by KGUMSB.

Over the past year, HMRC members have completed three externally funded research projects, in collaboration with a range of national and international partners, addressing chronic respiratory diseases, dengue, and leishmaniasis. Two more externally funded projects are currently underway, with several additional studies in the pipeline.

HMRC has also played a central role in strengthening research capacity and infrastructure. Members have delivered research methodology training to healthcare professionals, programme officers, and traditional medicine practitioners, and led the installation and roll-out of REDCap data collection platform, improving data quality while eliminating the cost of paper-based forms. Through its projects, the centre has trained spirometry technicians at seven hospitals nationwide, extending lung function testing beyond the JDW National Referral Hospital for the first time, and has re-established PCR testing capacity for leptospirosis at five hospitals through re-skilling training delivered in collaboration with the Royal Centres for Disease Control, Thimphu.

As the nodal agency for research activities at CRRH, HMRC has streamlined the review and approval process for research and quality improvement projects, ensuring faster turnaround times. The centre also provides monthly continuing professional development sessions for healthcare workers across hospitals in the southern belt.

These achievements underscore that health research extends beyond academic output - it translates directly into improved health services and patient outcomes. Building on this momentum and its expanding network of collaborators, HMRC has identified a set of priority activities for the year ahead, aimed at shaping policy and practice in Bhutan’s health sector.

‎An awareness program on malaria elimination was held today at the Central Regional Referral Hospital, Gelephu, bringing together officials from the Vector-borne Disease Control Programme (VDCP) and the Technical Advisory Group for Malaria Elimination (TAGME).
‎
‎Officials from VDCP walked participants through the history of Bhutan's fight against malaria, highlighting the consistent and sustained efforts undertaken by the country since the 1960s. Through decades of vector control, surveillance, early diagnosis, and treatment, Bhutan has made remarkable progress — with the last indigenous case of malaria recorded in November 2021.

‎The Chairperson of TAGME spoke on the significance of this milestone, noting that Bhutan is now preparing to apply for the WHO malaria elimination certification, a recognition that would mark the culmination of over six decades of dedicated public health work.

‎The program served as a timely reminder of the importance of continued vigilance, community participation, and inter-agency collaboration as the country moves closer to being officially certified malaria-free.

‎Since joining CRRH in January 2013 following her transfer from Eastern Regional Referral Hospital, Ms. Chhetri has devoted 13 years of dedicated service to the hospital and the people it serves. Renowned for her professionalism, compassion, and unwavering commitment to patient care, she has earned the respect and admiration of colleagues and patients alike.

‎As the In-charge of the Surgical Ward, she provided exemplary leadership in overseeing General Surgery, Orthopaedics, ENT, Ophthalmology, and Dental services. She also played an active role in strengthening hospital services through her valuable contributions to the Human Resource Committee (HRC), Max Moderation Committee, Quality Assurance Committee, Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Committee, Clinical Committee, AMS/AMR Committee, and Grievance Committee. In addition, she served as a panellist in the recruitment of ESP, GSP, and Operational Support (OS) staff.
