BHP Researchers Participate in VEME2026

The 29th International Workshop on Virus Evolution and Molecular Epidemiology (VEME2026) is currently underway at Bertha Retreat in Stellenbosch, South Africa, from 6–11 September 2026.

The six-day workshop brings together leading researchers from around the world for intensive theoretical lectures, practical sessions and keynote presentations focused on virus evolution, molecular epidemiology and bioinformatics.

The workshop features two key modules:

Phylogenetic Inference - providing theoretical foundations and hands-on experience in phylogenetic analysis for participants with little or no prior experience in sequence analysis.

Evolutionary Hypothesis Testing – designed for participants familiar with sequence alignments and phylogenetic trees, extending their expertise into likelihood and Bayesian inference, coalescent and phylogeographic analyses, and phylodynamics.

Participants are also gaining practical experience with a range of bioinformatics tools, including PHYML, MEGA, PAML, HYPHY, IQ-TREE, BEAST, SpreaD3, MEGAN, RAxML, Clusterpicker, BEAST2, RDP4, FigTree and Genome Detective, among others.

Representing the Botswana Harvard Health Partnership (BHP) at VEME2026 are Dr Natasha Moraka-Mankge and Patrick Mokgethi, who are attending the Phylogenetics Inference Module as presenters.

Their participation highlights BHP's continued contribution to strengthening expertise in genomic surveillance, bioinformatics and molecular epidemiology, while creating opportunities for knowledge exchange and collaboration with researchers from across the globe.

Bridging Research & Community Impact

On Thursday 13 August 2026, BHP brought together researchers, healthcare professionals, policymakers, community representatives and partners at the Bridging Research & Community Impact Workshop in Nyangabgwe Hospital, Francistown.

The workshop provided a platform to share findings from paediatric and adolescent HIV cure research and cancer studies, gather stakeholder perspectives and explore actionable steps for translating evidence into policy and practice.

As BHP marks 30 years of research and partnership, the message was clear that research must go beyond discovery, it must translate into action and healthier lives.

Together, we continue to build the bridge from evidence to impact, from research to communities, and from science to healthier lives.
