The Botswana Harvard Health Partnership (BHP) today (13 June 2026) met with its Community Advisory Board (CAB) to provide updates on several ongoing research studies and strengthen collaboration between researchers and the communities they serve.

The engagement provided an opportunity for study teams to share progress, discuss key achievements, and highlight challenges encountered during implementation. CAB members, who play a vital role in representing community perspectives, offered valuable insights and recommendations on participant retention, community engagement, and strategies to enhance the impact of research findings.

Through these regular interactions, BHP continues to ensure that its research remains community-informed, culturally responsive, and aligned with the health needs of the people of Botswana. The discussions also reinforced the importance of working together to improve study implementation and maximize the translation of research into meaningful public health outcomes.

We thank our CAB members for their continued commitment, guidance, and partnership in advancing health research that makes a difference.

Botswana Harvard Health Partnership (BHP) Executive Management today, 9 June 2026, met with the President of the Republic of Botswana, Mr. Duma Gideon Boko, at the Office of the President to brief him on the BHP mandate, its research scope, strategic value, and the importance of continued collaboration between BHP and the Ministry of Health.

BHP Executive Director, Dr. Gaerolwe Masheto, and his executive team highlighted the instituteโ€™s contributions to Botswanaโ€™s health sector over the past three decades, including impactful HIV and COVID-19 research, contributions to policies such as Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) and the attainment of the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets, the discovery of the Omicron variant, and the training of local scientists and healthcare professionals through BHPโ€™s capacity-building initiatives.

President Boko commended BHP for its outstanding contribution to research, noting that the institute has helped elevate Botswanaโ€™s global scientific profile. He emphasized the importance of evidence-based research in informing national development and encouraged BHP to continue expanding its research efforts in areas such as cancer, HIV discordancy, and drug resistance. He further implored BHP to continue playing a critical role in advising the national leadership and shaping best practices through scientific evidence.

The President also highlighted the importance of establishing sustainable domestic and African-led research funding mechanisms to reduce overreliance on external funding sources.

The BHP delegation included Executive Director Dr. Gaerolwe Masheto, Scientific Director Prof. Sikhulile Moyo, Operations Director Dineo Thebe, Business Development and Sponsored Awards Director Cornelius Gaetsaloe, and Communications Coordinator Tapela Morapedi. The meeting was also attended by the Minister of Health Dr. Stephen Modise and Acting Secretary for Specialized Care, Dr. Tshepo Machacha.

โ™ป๏ธ Making a Difference Beyond Research! โ™ป๏ธ

In celebration of World Environment Day and as part of our 30th Anniversary celebrations, Botswana Harvard Health Partnership (BHP) staff rolled up their sleeves this morning and took part in a community litter-picking campaign around the Marina area and Gaborone Senior Secondary School (GSS).

Volunteers were divided into teams covering different routes from Marina and the UB Circle, all converging at the GSS grounds after collecting litter along the way. Together, we demonstrated that a cleaner environment is everyoneโ€™s responsibility.

This initiative was made possible through valuable partnerships with O3 Beverages, who generously supplied drinking water for volunteers, and Gaborone City Council, who provided refuse bags and assisted with the collection and disposal of the litter after the clean-up.

A heartfelt thank you to all our partners and staff who dedicated their time and energy to making this initiative a success.
