Prof. Catherine K. Koofhethile & Pearl Ntshonga

At the Rapporteur report-back session of AIDS 2026 today, Prof. Catherine K. Koofhethile (Principal Investigator and Training and Development Manager, BHP) served as the Lead Rapporteur for Track A โ€“ Basic and Translational Science.

She summarized the latest advancements in HIV cure research, including the exciting report of two additional individuals who have achieved and maintained ART-free HIV remission following stem cell transplants. She highlighted several groundbreaking studies that contribute to the pursuit of a scalable and accessible HIV cure.

Prof. Khei, as Prof. Koofhethile is affectionately known, also served as co-chair of a pre-conference symposium session focusing on the HIV cure landscape in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Additionally, Pearl Ntshonga (Prof. Koofhethile's PhD student) presented a poster summarizing the perspectives of young people living with HIV and their caregivers on analytical treatment interruption (ATI)-inclusive studies.

We congratulate Prof. Khei and Pearl on representing BHP on the global stage and for delivering and showcasing outstanding contributions to the exciting, forward-looking science presented at AIDS 2026.

The Botswana Harvard Health Partnership (BHP) successfully hosted a two-day Bioinformatics, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science Training from 16โ€“17 July 2026 at Cresta Lodge, Gaborone, with participants attending both in person and virtually.

Originally planned as a fully in-person course, the training attracted significantly more applications than anticipated, suggesting a growing demand for advanced skills in bioinformatics, artificial intelligence and data science among researchers, students and healthcare professionals.

To accommodate as many participants as possible, the programme was restructured to provide virtual attendance. The first day focused on beginner-level concepts, while the second day covered more advanced topics. A different cohort of participants attended in person each day, with all remaining registered participants joining virtually, enabling broader access to the training.

The training was organised by BHP Training and Development Manager and Principal Investigator of the Phodiso Study, Prof. Catherine Koofhethile, and aimed at strengthening scientific capacity and developing the next generation of researchers.

Participants benefited from expert instruction by Prof. Malika Boudries of Harvard Medical School and Dr. Wonderful Choga, BHP's Senior Bioinformatician, who guided attendees through both the theoretical foundations and practical applications of bioinformatics and artificial intelligence in HIV research.

Phodiso Study Data Manager, Phenyo Sabone, provided technical assistance throughout the training, supporting participants with the installation and use of the course software to ensure a smooth learning experience.

The training built on the momentum of the 3rd BHP HIV Cure Symposium, which was held at the same venue on 15 July 2026, bringing together researchers, students and stakeholders to discuss advances in HIV cure research. The training was meant to equip researchers, students and professionals with the analytical tools needed to advance science.

In total, the training attracted 931 participants, with 105 attending in person over the two days and 826 participating virtually.

Driving Progress Towards an HIV Cure: BHP Convenes Third HIV Cure Symposium

Researchers, clinicians, policymakers, community representatives, stakeholders and development partners gathered today at the Botswana Harvard Health Partnership (BHP) HIV Cure Symposium at Cresta Lodge in Gaborone to discuss the latest advances in HIV cure research and strengthen collaboration towards ending the HIV epidemic.

The symposium showcased BHP-led research spanning basic laboratory science, clinical trials and community engagement, with presentations on HIV persistence, cure strategies, HIV treatment using broadly neutralising antibodies, and emerging approaches to HIV prevention and treatment. Delegates also heard a keynote address by Harvard Medical School's Prof. Malika Boudries on host factors influencing HIV persistence.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to collaboration and an invitation to stakeholders to participate in the upcoming Setting the HIV Cure Agenda Meeting for Botswana, which will be supported by the Sub-Saharan African Network for TB/HIV Research Excellence (SANTHE).
