BVI’s Technical Support in Action

Botswana Vaccine Institute (BVI) is widely recognised for supplying high-quality, fit-for-purpose vaccines. Beyond this, BVI provides specialised technical support that strengthens animal health systems through diagnostics, disease surveillance, advisory services, and outbreak response support.

Watch as Botswana Television captures the visit of Angola’s Minister of National Defence, Former Combatants and Veterans of the Homeland, His Excellency General (Rtd) Lúcio Gonçalves Amaral, and his delegation to BVI during their diplomatic visit to Botswana.

During the engagement, our Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr Keabetswe Moagabo and the BVI Executive Team unpacked BVI’s technical support offering to Angola, especially as the region responds to the current FMD outbreak.

With proven expertise and continental and international experience, BVI continues to provide this critical service across Botswana, the SADC region, and beyond.

Did you know technical support is one of BVI’s key services?

Botswana Vaccine Institute supported the Southern District Beef Farmers Association Workshop held on 25 July 2026 at Marapalalo Farm, Tshidilamolomo, under the theme: “Sensitising the Communities on FMD Biosecurity Measures.”

Officially opening the workshop, Minister of Lands and Agriculture, Dr Edwin Gorataone Dikoloti, commended community volunteers for their role in constructing and patrolling containment fences. He urged farmers to support vaccination campaigns, comply with biosecurity measures, and report illegal livestock movements to help contain Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD).

Providing a disease update, FMD Coordinator for Zone 11, Dr Odireleng Thololwane, reported that approximately 88% of the 150,000 cattle within the containment zone have been vaccinated and called for continued community cooperation to eliminate FMD from affected areas.

The workshop reinforced the importance of collective action in protecting Botswana’s livestock sector, safeguarding market access, and strengthening farmer livelihoods.

As a key animal health partner, BVI reaffirmed its commitment to national FMD control efforts through the provision of fit-for-purpose vaccines and technical support, working alongside government, veterinary authorities, and farming communities to enhance disease prevention and biosecurity across the country.

Together, through vaccination, awareness, and responsible biosecurity practices, we can build a more resilient and sustainable livestock industry.

Today is the day!

Botswana Vaccine Institute (BVI) is proud to participate in and support the Southern District Beef Farmers Association Workshop, taking place today 25 July 2026 at Tshidilamolomo, Marapalalo Farm, under the theme:

“Sensitising the Communities on FMD Biosecurity Measures.”

The workshop will be officially opened by the Honourable Minister of Lands and Agriculture, Dr Edwin Dikoloti, who will also deliver the keynote address.

As Botswana continues to safeguard its livestock sector, workshops of this nature play a vital role in empowering farmers and communities with practical knowledge on Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) prevention, early detection, reporting, movement control, and farm-level biosecurity practices.

BVI’s relevance to this important engagement lies in its core mandate of supporting animal health through the production, and supply of high-quality livestock vaccines, including vaccines used in the control of transboundary animal diseases such as FMD.

FMD biosecurity is not only a veterinary responsibility, it is a shared community commitment. Every farmer, herder, trader, and stakeholder has a role to play in protecting livelihoods, preserving market access, and securing the future of Botswana’s beef value chain.

Together, through vaccination, awareness, training and empowerment, as well as responsible biosecurity practices, we build stronger and more resilient farming communities.
