🌿 WHY BATSWANA SHOULD GROW COMFREY

Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) is a remarkable medicinal plant with a long history of traditional use. It is a hardy perennial that can be grown in home gardens, making it an interesting addition to Botswana’s growing interest in natural and locally available plants.

🌱 Why grow Comfrey?
Comfrey has traditionally been valued for its soothing and restorative properties, particularly for bruises, sprains, minor swelling, fractures, joint pain, muscular aches and general tissue support when used externally.

Its leaves and roots have also been traditionally used in herbal preparations such as salves, creams, poultices and compresses.

Beyond its herbal value, comfrey is an excellent garden plant and natural composting resource, with nutrient-rich leaves that can be used to enrich the soil.

🇧🇼 Why not grow our own medicinal plants?
Botswana has the climate, land and traditional knowledge to develop a stronger culture of growing useful plants at home. Growing comfrey is one small step towards preserving herbal knowledge, strengthening household self-reliance and reconnecting with the healing potential of plants.

🌿 Grow it. Learn it. Preserve the knowledge.

🌿🇧🇼 WHY SHOULD BATSWANA GROW ASHWAGANDHA IN BOTSWANA?

Ashwagandha is a traditional medicinal plant that has gained worldwide attention for its potential role in supporting stress management, relaxation, sleep, energy, mental wellbeing and overall vitality.

So why should we continue importing it when we can explore growing this valuable medicinal plant right here in Botswana?

🌱 Growing Ashwagandha locally could:
• Promote the presence and appreciation of natural medicine in Botswana
• Create opportunities for farmers and local herbal businesses
• Reduce dependence on imported products
• Encourage research into its cultivation and traditional uses
• Increase access to locally grown medicinal plants
• Contribute to a growing natural-health economy

Botswana has the people, land and agricultural potential. Let us not only consume natural medicine—let us grow it, study it and develop it.

🇧🇼 Ashwagandha could be one small seed towards a bigger vision: a Botswana where medicinal plants are cultivated locally and natural medicine has a stronger place in our communities.

🌿 Let’s grow natural medicine. Let’s grow opportunity. Let’s grow Botswana.

🌿 Medicine Can Begin in Your Garden

There is something inspiring about Cancerbush. It thrives where conditions are harsh, yet season after season it returns with soft grey-green leaves and brilliant scarlet flowers—a reminder that resilience is part of nature.

For generations, people across southern Africa have treasured Cancerbush as one of our indigenous medicinal plants. It has traditionally been used to support general wellbeing, vitality, and recovery, preserving knowledge that has been passed from one generation to the next.

As Botswana continues to experience periods of medicine shortages, perhaps this is also a time to rethink our relationship with the plants God has placed around us.

Imagine if every household had a small medicinal garden with carefully selected indigenous and culinary herbs. While home-grown plants are not a replacement for professional medical care, they can help preserve health and encourage healthier lifestyles.

🌱 Plant a medicinal garden. 🌱 Learn about our indigenous plants. 🌱 Teach your children their value. 🌱 Protect Botswana's botanical heritage. 🌱 Grow knowledge, not just plants.

I also believe the greatest wealth is empowering people to understand and responsibly cultivate medicinal plants for the future.

What medicinal plants are growing in your yard or village? Let's celebrate and preserve Botswana's natural heritage together. 🌿🇧🇼

Medicine making is a skill that many Batswana must learn fast to save our loved ones. While there are no medicines in local hospitals we must not be hopeless, we can learn and change the situation. It is true that BOMRA through Port Health is making the situation difficult for those in the natural medicine market therefore every household must challenge itself to grow medicinal plants and make their own medicine. Melemo ya sepatela e tlaa fitlhela re dira ebile re tshela... challenge yourself. Good night.

Note that pomegranate husk is different than the fruit (pips) of the pomegranate.

While the fruit is delicious and full of polyphenols that also feed the gut microbiome, the husk is especially therapeutic.

You can purchase husk supplements, but you can also make your own by slowly drying the husk on low heat in the oven (or dehydrating) and then blending or grinding it into a powder.

"Disease is an effort of nature to free the system from conditions that result from a violation of the laws of health. In case of sickness, the cause should be ascertained. Unhealthful conditions should be changed, wrong habits corrected. Then nature is to be assisted in her effort to expel impurities and to re-establish right conditions in the system."
