According ‌to a report in The Lancet, the new name, polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome, or PMOS, was chosen by a global coalition of patients, clinicians, and medical organizations to better reflect the condition’s wide-ranging hormonal and metabolic impacts.

The focus ‌on ovarian cysts has led to delays in diagnoses and fragmented care, while the new name aims to improve how the condition is detected, treated, and explained, the researchers said.

Symptoms of PMOS include irregular or absent menstrual cycles, infertility, pregnancy complications, excess hair growth, acne, anxiety and depression, ‌weight ‌gain, obesity, diabetes and other disturbances in insulin, and cardiovascular disease.

"Endometriosis is a chronic, inflammatory, estrogen- dependent disorder defined by the presence of lesions of endometrial-like tissue outside the uterus. The condition can affect multiple systems in the body, causing pain, infertility, and decreased health-related quality of life, sexual satisfaction, and work productivity. Endometriosis occurs primarily in women of reproductive age, although it has been reported in premenarchal and postmenopausal patients. The reported prevalence rate of endometriosis ranges from 0.7% to 8.6% among women in the general population, whereas endometriosis has been observed in 9.0–68.0% of women with subfertility and 15.4–71.4% of women with chronic pelvic pain. The true prevalence of endometriosis among adolescents in the general population is unknown; however, endometriosis has been identified in 64% of adolescents undergoing laparoscopy for pelvic pain.

The purpose of this Clinical Practice Guideline is to provide evidence-based recommendations for the evaluation and diagnosis of endometriosis in symptomatic adult and adolescent patients."
