# # 🤱 **World Breastfeeding Week**

# # # **Protecting the First Gift We Give Our Babies**

As we celebrate World Breastfeeding Week, I would like to share one of my concerns as an obstetrician and gynecologist.

Over the years, I have noticed an increasing tendency to introduce infant formula very early after birth, often because of concerns about low blood sugar or the belief that the mother is not producing enough milk.

While there are situations where formula supplementation is medically necessary, I believe we should be careful not to make it the routine approach for healthy newborns.

Early unnecessary supplementation may reduce the chances of achieving **exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months**, as some babies may become less interested in breastfeeding or have more difficulty establishing a good latch.

Breastfeeding offers much more than nutrition. It provides:
🤱 The ideal food and hydration for your baby.
🛡️ Natural protection against many infections.
❤️ Stronger bonding between mother and baby, especially through skin-to-skin contact.
🌸 Benefits for the mother's recovery after pregnancy and childbirth.

# # # 🩺 **Dr. Pedro's Reflection**

*"One of my greatest concerns is seeing mothers lose confidence in breastfeeding during the very first days of their baby's life. In many cases, what they need is reassurance, skin-to-skin contact, frequent breastfeeding, and the right support—not an early replacement of breast milk. Every mother deserves encouragement before believing that breastfeeding has failed.*

*Whenever it is safe and medically appropriate, my advice will always be to protect and support exclusive breastfeeding. It is one of the greatest gifts we can offer a newborn, benefiting both mother and baby for many years to come."*

At **NovaCare Obstetrics & Gynecology**, we are committed to supporting mothers throughout their breastfeeding journey because every family deserves the best possible start.

🤰 DID YOU KNOW?

Over the years, I have noticed that many expectant mothers are never told about the different tests that can help us assess their baby's health before birth.

Many people only hear about these tests when they are considered "high-risk," but every pregnancy deserves an informed discussion.

Depending on your stage of pregnancy and your individual situation, different screening options are available, including:

🩸 Blood tests • First Trimester Combined Screening • NIPT (Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing) • Triple Screening Test

📡 Ultrasound screening • Nuchal Translucency (NT) Scan • Detailed Fetal Anomaly Scan

🧬 Diagnostic tests (when indicated) • Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) • Amniocentesis

These tests can help identify the risk of conditions such as Down syndrome, Trisomy 18, Trisomy 13, spina bifida, and other important fetal abnormalities.

It is important to remember that screening tests estimate risk—they do not make a diagnosis. If a screening test shows a high risk, further diagnostic testing may be recommended.

Not every mother needs every test, but every mother deserves to know that these options exist.

At NovaCare Obstetrics & Gynecology, we believe that informed parents make confident decisions. We take the time to explain which tests are appropriate, when they should be done, and what the results mean.

# # **A Dilemma Worth Discussing… Unplanned Pregnancy**

An unplanned pregnancy can change a person's life in an instant.

For some, it brings financial pressure, relationship challenges, emotional stress, or uncertainty about the future.

For others, an unexpected pregnancy becomes one of life's greatest blessings.

Every story is different.

But perhaps the most important question is not:

**"What should I do after an unplanned pregnancy?"**

Instead, we should ask:

**"How can we reduce the chances of facing this dilemma?"**

Today, family planning gives individuals and couples the opportunity to choose **if**, **when**, and **how** to grow their families. Planning a pregnancy often means being better prepared emotionally, physically, and financially.

# # # 🩺 Dr. Pedro's Reflection

*"As an obstetrician and gynecologist, I have seen both the challenges and the unexpected joys that can follow an unplanned pregnancy. My greatest wish is that every pregnancy is welcomed at the right time for each family. Through education, family planning, and professional guidance, many of these difficult dilemmas can be prevented."*

FATHERS CAN EXPERIENCE POSTNATAL DEPRESSION TOO

June is Men's Health Month.

When we talk about emotional wellbeing after childbirth, we often focus on mothers—and rightly so. However, fathers can also experience depression, anxiety, stress, and emotional difficulties during the postnatal period.

The arrival of a new baby brings many changes: • Sleep deprivation • Increased responsibilities • Financial pressures • Relationship adjustments • Worry about the wellbeing of mother and baby

Some fathers may experience: 🔹 Persistent sadness 🔹 Irritability 🔹 Anxiety 🔹 Fatigue 🔹 Difficulty sleeping 🔹 Feeling overwhelmed or disconnected

Seeking support is not a sign of weakness. Healthy fathers contribute to healthy mothers, healthy babies, and stronger families.

As we celebrate Men's Health Month and Father's Day, let us remember that fathers matter too.

INFERTILITY IS NOT ALWAYS A WOMAN'S PROBLEM

Did You Know?

When a couple struggles to conceive, many people immediately assume the problem is with the woman.

The truth is that fertility is a shared journey.

Male factors contribute to many cases of infertility and may include:

✅ Smoking
✅ Excessive alcohol use
✅ Obesity
✅ Certain medical conditions
✅ Hormonal problems
✅ Exposure to excessive heat or toxins

Infections affecting the prostate, epididymis, te**es, or reproductive tract may affect s***m quality and fertility. Early diagnosis and treatment are important

A fertility evaluation should include both partners to ensure that potential causes are identified early, and appropriate treatment can be offered.

Healthy lifestyle choices can improve reproductive health in both men and women.

Remember: seeking help is not about blame—it is about finding answers and building your family together.

TRYING FOR A BABY??

Many factors influence fertility, and some of the most important ones are within our control.

Healthy lifestyle habits can help improve reproductive health in both women and men:

✅ Maintain a healthy weight
✅ Eat a balanced nutritious diet
✅ Exercise regularly
✅ Avoid smoking and recreational drugs
✅ Limit alcohol consumption
✅ Get adequate sleep
✅ Manage stress

Remember: fertility is not only a women's issue. Male factors contribute to many cases of infertility, which is why both partners should be evaluated when pregnancy is not occurring as expected.

If you have concerns about your fertility, early assessment can help identify potential problems and guide appropriate treatment.

The good news is that vaginismus is treatable, and many women improve significantly with proper support and management.

Today we join the world in observing International Preeclampsia Awareness Day.

Preeclampsia is a serious pregnancy condition associated with high blood pressure and organ involvement that can threaten the life of both mother and baby if not detected early.

Seek urgent medical attention if you experience:

🔴 Severe headache
🔴 Swelling of the face or hands
🔴 Blurred vision
🔴 Severe abdominal pain
🔴 Reduced baby movements
🔴 High blood pressure

Regular antenatal care is very important because early identification and proper management of high-risk patients can significantly reduce the possibility of severe complications for both mother and baby.

Early detection saves lives.

Painful periods are common, but severe pain should not be ignored.

If your period pain affects your daily activities, keeps you away from school or work, disturbs your sleep, causes pain during s*x, or is getting worse over time, it may be a sign of an underlying condition such as endometriosis, fibroids, adenomyosis, pelvic infection, or ovarian cysts.

You do not have to suffer in silence. Proper assessment can help identify the cause and guide treatment.
