TEST OF THE WEEK:

The Antistreptolysin O (ASO) test is a blood test that measures antibodies produced by your immune system after an infection with Group A Streptococcus (Strep).

Why is it important?

ASO can provide evidence of a recent streptococcal infection, especially when complications such as rheumatic fever or post streptococcal glomerulonephritis are being investigated.

What does an elevated ASO mean?

It may indicate a recent or past Strep infection. However, an elevated result does not necessarily mean you currently have an active infection.

TEST OF THE WEEK: TROPONIN

Ever wondered what a Troponin test is and why it’s so important? 🫀

Troponin is a protein found inside heart muscle cells. When the heart muscle is damaged, troponin can be released into the bloodstream. A blood test can measure these levels and help healthcare providers determine whether heart muscle injury has occurred.

Why is the Troponin test important?
• Helps detect or rule out a heart attack (myocardial infarction)
• Helps evaluate people with symptoms such as chest pain or shortness of breath
• Can help assess the extent and timing of heart muscle injury
• Often measured more than once to look for changes over time

What does an elevated troponin mean?
An elevated result indicates heart muscle injury, but it does not automatically mean a heart attack. Other conditions including myocarditis, heart failure, abnormal heart rhythms, pulmonary embolism, kidney disease, or severe illness which can also cause elevated troponin.

Remember: Troponin results should always be interpreted together with symptoms, medical history, ECG findings, and repeat measurements.

TEST OF THE WEEK: CBC/FBC 🔬

What does CBC (Complete Blood Count) or FBC (Full Blood Count) tells us?

This common blood test gives us important information about your:
• Hemoglobin (HGB) is a protein inside the red blood cells that carry oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body.

• Hematocrit (HCT) tells us the percentage of your blood that is made up of red blood cells.

• Red blood cells (RBC) help carry oxygen throughout the body and bring the carbon dioxide back to the lungs to be breathed out. It can also be referred to as erythrocytes.

• White blood cells (WBC) help fight infections by circulating the blood and lymphatic system identifying and protecting the body from bacteria, viruses, parasites and any abnormalities found. They can also be referred to as Leukocytes.

• Platelets help your blood clot and prevent excessive bleeding. They’re also called thrombocytes.

Overall, a CBC/FBC can help detect or monitor conditions such as anemia, infections, inflammation, and blood disorders.

A small sample of blood can tell us a lot!

TEST OF THE WEEK:

TYPES OF ANEMIA

Did you know that anemia is not always caused by low iron?

Anemia is a condition where your body has fewer healthy red blood cells than normal. It can be grouped into different types based on the size of the red blood cells: small, normal, or large. Each type may have different causes.

A CBC (Complete Blood Count) is usually the first test done to check for anemia. It helps doctors see your red blood cell levels and understand what might be causing the problem, so the right treatment can be given.

Have you ever wondered… what exactly is a Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT)?

Welcome back to Test of the Week! This week, we’re exploring the Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT). An important test that shows how well your body processes sugar (glucose).

So, what is it?
The GTT measures how your blood sugar changes after drinking a special glucose solution. It helps determine how effectively your body uses insulin to move glucose from your bloodstream into your cells.

What happens during the test?
•You’ll need to fast for 8–12 hours before the test.
• a fasting blood sample is collected.
• You’ll drink a measured glucose solution.
• Additional blood samples are taken at specific intervals (within 3 hours) to monitor how your blood sugar changes.

Why is it important?
A Glucose Tolerance Test can help diagnose:
• Prediabetes
• Diabetes
• Gestational diabetes (during pregnancy)
• Other conditions affecting how your body handles glucose

Early detection means early treatment, helping reduce the risk of long-term complications and supporting better overall health.
