World Hypertension Day!

Today, world hypertension day is being observed under the theme "Controlling Hypertension Together: Check Your Blood Pressure Regularly, Defeat the Silent Killer" and this stands as a reminder of the importance of always knowing our blood pressure numbers.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in Belize and hypertension is one of major risk factors for this.

It is called the "silent assassin" because contrary to popular belief, most cases (even the numbers are high) show no sign or symptom.

There are simple changes to our lifestyle that help keep those numbers down.

Beyond hydration… UV exposure!

Traditionally, we worry about staying hydrated in the heat but rarely do we worry about the UV index.

The estimated UV index in the Cayo area is 10! This is a very high index that requires special levels of protection!

The use of sunscreen (SPF 50+) is warranted as well as sunglasses that provide 100% protection against UVA / UVB light (not all sunglasses provide this protection)!

Do minimize your exposure to direct sunlight as much as possible!
