A sunburn fades. The damage does not.

Sunburn is often treated like a temporary part of summer, but UV exposure can affect the skin long after the redness is gone.

Understanding that risk is one of the most important steps in protecting your skin, especially during the months when sun exposure increases.

Swipe through to learn about the link between sunburn, UV exposure, and skin cancer risk.

And when in doubt, get it checked out.

Any lesion that changes size, shape, or colour, or begins to bleed or itch, needs to be checked by a medical professional.

Did you know that your moles should be professionally assessed before getting a tattoo?

Changes in a mole's size, shape, and colour are a few of the key ways that skin cancer is identified in the early stages. Tattooing over (or even near!) a mole can change its appearance, which can camouflage early warning signs of skin cancer.

If you're planning to get a tattoo this summer, please be sure to have the mole assessed by a professional beforehand.

FAQ: Is mole mapping covered by MSP?

A: As a private, preventative screening service, our mole mapping scan is not covered by the BC Medical Services Plan (MSP). If a biopsy or removal of a lesion is medically required, that component is eligible for MSP coverage. It may also be worthwhile to check with your extended health benefits provider to see whether this type of preventative screening service is eligible for coverage.

“What is a dermascope?”

A dermascope is a medical tool that uses specialized lighting and magnification to examine the skin. By using polarized light, we can see structures on the skin, and just below the outer layer, by reducing surface reflection.

Pigmentation networks and small blood vessels may be invisible during a standard skin exam, but dermascopes reveal these, allowing us to get a more accurate assessment of your skin.

May is Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Month.

Although skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer, it is very treatable when it is identified early. Regular skin checks are an essential part of proactive health care.

This month we encourage you to prioritize your skin health. This could mean wearing sunscreen every day, doing a self-exam on any moles you have, or booking an appointment with us for a full-body skin scan.

Naked eye vs. dermoscope 🔎

The dermascope allows us to identify the earliest structural signs of skin cancer that the naked eye misses entirely. It’s the difference between guessing and knowing exactly what’s happening on and just under your skin.

Proactive skin health starts with a baseline scan. Visit our website to book yours!
