Can we stop pretending summer is automatically relaxing? For a lot of people, summer is just... regular life with more logistics.😬

Kids are home. Everyone wants something. The routines that usually keep you afloat disappear. You're trying to make memories while also remembering sunscreen, groceries, appointments, and where on earth everyone's water bottle went.

No wonder you're tired!🫠

If you've been thinking, "I should be enjoying this more," maybe the problem isn't you. The problem is the problem and maybe.... just maybe...you're carrying too much (like the 7 bags of groceries on both arms while unlocking the house and wrangling children into the door). You can do anything, but not everything. ♥️

You don't have to earn rest. You don't have to wait until September to take care of yourself. And you definitely don't have to hit complete burnout before asking for support. I have been there. Done that. And even though it feels like culture rewards the burnt out and exhausted, I am not sure that is... Sustainable. 🤷‍♀️🙅‍♀️

If this season has felt heavier than you expected, we're here.

No fixing. No judgment. Just a place to put some of the weight down for a while.

Some people come to therapy because they know exactly what happened. And...

Others come because they can't explain why they're exhausted, anxious, disconnected, or constantly on edge.

Often, there's a story underneath those experiences that has never had the space to be understood.

If you've been wondering whether therapy could help, a consultation is simply a conversation. No pressure. No obligation. Just an opportunity to see whether the fit feels right.

What is one thing you wish people understood about healing?

Want to know what one of my favorite forms of therapy is?

Sandtray.

Yes, it looks like play (hear me out!) and it also does some deep work your brain already knows how to do.

When words get stuck (trauma, overwhelm, “I don’t even know where to start”), your brain keeps working. It shifts into images, symbols, body sensations, and emotion instead of language. I’ve been in my own sessions where my words just… don’t come. And that can make traditional talk therapy feel frustrating. It's why I'm pretty passionate about:

Right fit between therapist and person.
Right time.
Right approach (talk therapy isn't the only type out there).

In the sandtray, you get to build what your inner world feels like, move things safely that feel immovable in real life, create distance from heavy experiences without avoiding them (my personal favorite), and access insight without overthinking every step.

And yes, this is absolutely for adults. Many of the people I do Sandtray with end up saying, “wait… why is this so helpful?” halfway through. My personal favorite is reflection later on when clients say: “why do I keep picturing this Rosie the Riveter figurine and feel better afterward?!”

Because it sidesteps the pressure to say it “the right way” and lets you connect with what’s actually true. Theres no perfect wording required, and honestly, a lot of people thrive with hands on or visual interventions more than talk therapy.

Also… tiny figurines and sand? Weirdly satisfying.

Fun fact: I actually hate the feeling of sand 😂 and yet this is still one of my favorite modalities. Tweezers, tiny rakes, and a little strainer tool for the win.

“Wait… you’re nominated too?!”

That was the moment we realized we’re both nominated for Amazing Entrepreneur. Yay Michelle!

It’s such an honour to be included alongside so many incredible women in this community. There are so many people doing meaningful work, building businesses, and supporting others in ways that make a real difference in Airdrie.

Grateful to be part of a community like this and to share the moment with friends.

I may still slightly be adjusting to the idea of being seen in this way. 😅

✨ Meet Emma Mills ✨

Some couples come to therapy saying things like:

“We keep having the same argument.”
“Every conversation somehow turns into conflict.”
“We love each other… but things feel harder than they used to.”

Emma works with couples who want to understand what’s happening in those moments and find a way forward together.

In couples counselling, Emma helps partners slow down the conversations that spiral, understand the patterns underneath the conflict, and learn ways of communicating that bring more connection back into the relationship.

Clients often describe Emma as calm, thoughtful, and easy to talk to. With over 25 years of experience as a mental health therapist, she consistently creates space for both partners to feel heard while helping couples move toward meaningful change.

Outside the therapy room, Emma enjoys spending time outdoors, travelling, being with family, and the everyday small moments that help us recharge.

If you and your partner are feeling stuck in the same conversations, Emma offers a free 20-minute consultation.

Did you know there are tiny “smile givers” hidden all around our office? 🦆🐮🐱🐢 This latest one showed up on my desk as I came in after vacation and it and it's message brought such a smile to my face.

It started with just a few that appeared one day, we have no idea who left them. But over the past few weeks, more little friends have been showing up and quietly moving around the space.

A duck on a shelf.

A cat tucked beside a plant.

A tiny Highland cow waiting to be discovered.

The joy on the faces of the little ones from when they find one is pure magic. And honestly? Watching someone quietly move one to a new spot so the next person can discover it might be even better.

It’s such a small thing.

But small things matter.

This is how change happens—little by little, one small moment of joy at a time.

Sometimes emotions can be super scary and really big so if this is too much right now, know that's where people like me come in. We are trained to help people safely go through this process. Most of us didn't learn this when we were younger and we may have years of built up feelings that we need some help releasing.

We are trained to help you move from forcing open a Feelings Instantpot (dangerous!) to strategically venting that same Instant pot or helping it naturally release pressure.

Intellectualizing feelings isn’t the same as processing them.

When my stomach growls, I don’t just think:
“Huh. I’m hungry. It’s been four hours since I last ate.”
…and then call it a day.

Because knowing ≠ responding.

And my stomach is still hungry.

Instead, I notice: • the body sensations
• the thoughts about food

I acknowledge them, name them…

and then I do something about it (eat now or make a plan to eat).

Feelings work the same way.
• Notice them — what sensations are there? Where?
• Acknowledge them
• Name them
• Witness them or contain them for later
• Gently roll with resistance if it shows up

Awareness is the first step.

Response is what actually creates change.
