Dr. Mountain still thinks he's 29 and won't slow down in sports. So, sometimes injuries happen! Here Dr. Yee is assessing Dr. Mountain's shoulder.

In our last post about Prolotherapy, we introduced cluneal nerve pain and mentioned that it is many times mistaken for "sciatica".

So what's the difference?

1. The sciatic nerve only carries sensory (Pain and temperature) signals from the knee and below. This means if you have pain in your thigh, particularly in the outside of your thigh it is most likely not sciatica.
a.Sciatic pain usually presents as pain in the calf, heel and feet. Occasionally you can have mid thigh pain if the sciatic blockage is significant and long term.
2. Cluneal pain is usually helped significantly with a small anesthetic injection in the low back. I use this injection as a "diagnostic injection" to figure out if this particular nerve is affected. Sciatic nerve pain can be much more complex, as it comes from a deeper origin in the back.
3. Both will be aggravated by movement and/or rest, depending on the individual and the issue that is causing the pain (misalignment, nerve impingement etc)
4. It is also important with low back pain to determine if the pain is coming from a pelvic organ such as the uterus in women or the bowel/colon in both sexes - the low back is a common referral for pelvic pain.

Cluneal nerve pain is a common cause of low back pain. It shows up as pain in the upper/outside of the hip/glut (1) as well as down the outside of the thigh (3 - which gets mistaken as sciatic pain many times) as well as occasionally showing up by causing pain in the inner thigh/groin area (2).

Many times this pain is due to an impinged nerve and can be solved in a few visits - occasionally it is due to injury of another structure in the area called the Iliolumbar ligament which requires more intensive treatment.

The mainstay of treatment is an injection therapy called Prolotherapy. This is a restorative therapy that will cause long-lasting prevention and treatment of the cause of pain.

Dr Yee has treated low back pain and cluneal pain specifically for over a decade and brings his skills to airdrie.
