It’s back to school time! Start this year with the right backpack to minimize back and neck discomfort. 🎒

✅️ Look for wide, padded shoulders to reduce the weight on the shoulders and neck.

✅️ A padded back can provide extra comfort.

✅️ Multiple compartments help distribute the load evenly and keep items organized.

✅️ Whenever possible, try the backpack on and assess how it feels when fully loaded. Adjust the straps to ensure a comfortable fit and walk around to get a sense of how it distributes weight. The backpack should not hang below the waist.

‼️ A 2018 research study suggests that backpacks should be no more than 10% of the wearer’s body. If a student weighs 130 pounds, their backpack should only weigh 13 pounds. How much does your student’s backpack weigh?

You can minimize discomfort and poor posture habits by making sure your student has the right backpack.

If you or you student does experience discomfort, our Physiotherapists can help with a thorough assessment and treatment plan. 👩‍🔬👨‍🔬

Next on our Physiotherapist highlights....Aaron.

Aaron grew up on both sides of the Canadian Prairies. A Calgarian by birth, he spent his youth in Winnipeg before returning to Calgary in his teens. Aaron completed his Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Health Physiology at the University of Calgary in 2019, and completed his Master of Science in Physical Therapy with the University of Alberta in 2021.
