Have You Heard of โSickness Behaviorโ?
Ever noticed that when youโre coming down with a cold or fighting an infection, you suddenly:
๐ด Want to sleep all day
๐ฅฑ Have no motivation
๐งโโ๏ธ Want to be left alone
๐ Feel sad or malaise
๐ฝ๏ธ Lose your appetite
๐ง Feel foggy or unable to concentrate
๐โโ๏ธ Have no desire to exercise or do anything!
This is known as sickness behavior - a biochemical response that occurs when your immune system is activated.
When your body detects an infection, injury, or inflammation, immune cells release chemical messengers called cytokines. These cytokines communicate with the brain and trigger a temporary shift in behavior designed to help you slow down and recover.
In other words, your body intentionally encourages you to:
โจ Rest more
โจ Conserve energy
โจ Reduce unnecessary activity
โจ Focus resources on healing
From an evolutionary perspective, sickness behavior is protective. If our ancestors continued hunting, gathering, socializing, and expending energy while sick, recovery would have been slower and survival less likely.
The good news? In most cases, sickness behavior is temporary and improves as the immune response settles. Butโฆ researchers have found that chronic low-grade inflammation may create an ongoing version of sickness behavior which may present as depression or psychosis. This may contribute to symptoms such as fatigue, low motivation, brain fog, weepiness, not feeling like oneโs self, and reduced enjoyment of everyday activities. ๐ฅ
Sometimes what looks like โlazinessโ is actually biology.
Your body may simply be asking for rest, recovery, and support. And understandingโฆ which I hope this post helps with. ๐
Have you ever noticed these symptoms when youโre fighting something?
