**Know Your Numbers: 5 Markers That Tell Us More About Metabolic Health 📊**

Metabolic health is about much more than the number on the scale. Some of the most useful information comes from looking at a few key health markers together.

Here are 5 worth knowing:

🩺 **Blood Pressure** — Elevated blood pressure can be an early sign of increased cardiovascular and metabolic risk.

📏 **Waist Circumference** — Where we carry body fat can sometimes tell us more about metabolic risk than weight or BMI alone.

🩸 **Blood Glucose & HbA1c** — These help us understand how effectively the body is regulating blood sugar and can identify changes well before diabetes develops.

❤️ **Triglycerides** — Elevated triglycerides can be associated with insulin resistance and increased cardiovascular risk.

🔬 **ApoB & Cholesterol Markers** — Looking beyond total cholesterol can provide a more complete picture of cardiovascular risk.

The important part? **No single number tells the whole story.** Your health history, family history, lifestyle, symptoms and how these markers relate to one another all matter.

Understanding your numbers can help identify areas to work on now—and provide an objective way to track whether your health is moving in the right direction.

At Aspire Natural Health, we take an individualized approach to metabolic and cardiovascular health, using appropriate assessment and testing to help develop a plan that makes sense for you.

**"Your bloodwork is normal."**

For many people, that's reassuring. But if you're still experiencing symptoms, it may not tell the whole story.

Blood tests are an important part of assessing your health, but they are only one piece of the puzzle. They need to be interpreted alongside your symptoms, medical history, physical examination, and, when appropriate, additional testing.

Persistent fatigue, digestive issues, brain fog, hair loss, or unexplained weight changes can sometimes occur even when routine bloodwork doesn't point to a clear diagnosis.

That doesn't mean something serious is being missed—but it does mean your symptoms deserve thoughtful evaluation rather than dismissal.

Good healthcare isn't just about treating lab results. It's about understanding the person behind them.

If you're not feeling your best despite being told everything is "normal," don't ignore what your body is trying to tell you.

**"It's probably just IBS."** Maybe. But maybe not.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a diagnosis made **after** other conditions have been appropriately considered and ruled out. While IBS is common, its symptoms—bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, or alternating bowel habits—can overlap with several other digestive conditions.

Depending on your symptoms, your healthcare provider may need to consider possibilities such as:
• Celiac disease
• Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis)
• Diverticular disease
• Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)
• Food intolerances
• Microscopic colitis
• Bile acid malabsorption

The goal isn't to assume the worst—it's to make sure you're treating the **right** problem.

If you've been told you have IBS but continue to struggle despite treatment, it may be worth asking whether the diagnosis still fits or whether additional evaluation is appropriate.

A diagnosis should provide clarity, not simply end the conversation.

If you find yourself reaching for another coffee or something sweet every afternoon, it may be worth paying attention.

That 3 p.m. energy crash isn't always just a busy day—it can be your body's way of signaling that something is out of balance.

Common contributors include:
• Blood sugar fluctuations
• Poor sleep quality
• Chronic stress
• Iron deficiency
• Thyroid dysfunction
• Dehydration
• Skipping meals or not eating enough protein

While an occasional afternoon slump is normal, feeling exhausted every day isn't something you should simply accept.

Understanding *why* your energy is crashing is the first step toward finding a solution. Rather than masking the symptoms, addressing the underlying cause can help you achieve more consistent energy throughout the day.

Do you hit an afternoon energy slump, or are your energy levels steady all day?

Inflammation can be a serious health concern but it is also a normal and essential part of the body's healing process. But when low-grade inflammation persists over time, it can quietly contribute to the development or progression of many chronic health conditions.

Chronic inflammation has been linked to cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, autoimmune conditions, and even depression. Unlike acute inflammation, it often doesn't cause obvious symptoms until it has been present for years.

The good news is that lifestyle can make a meaningful difference. Regular physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, not smoking, and a diet rich in vegetables, fruit, legumes, healthy fats, and whole grains have all been shown to help support a healthy inflammatory response.

Rather than masking symptoms, it's important to understand what may be driving inflammation in the first place.

Have you ever wondered whether inflammation could be affecting your health?

🧠❤️ **Did You Know Your Gut and Brain Are Constantly Talking to Each Other?**

Have you ever noticed "butterflies" in your stomach before a big event or lost your appetite when you're stressed?

That's because your gut and brain are connected through what scientists call the **gut-brain axis**—a complex communication network involving nerves, hormones, the immune system, and the trillions of microbes living in your digestive tract.

When the gut isn't functioning optimally, it may contribute to:
🌿 Low mood
🌿 Anxiety
🌿 Brain fog
🌿 Fatigue
🌿 Poor sleep
🌿 Digestive symptoms such as bloating, IBS, or irregular bowel habits

Likewise, chronic stress can alter digestion, affect the gut microbiome, and increase inflammation—creating a cycle that can be difficult to break.

As a Naturopathic Doctor, I often explore gut health when working with patients experiencing mood concerns. Depending on the individual, this may include:
🥗 Optimizing nutrition
🦠 Supporting a healthy gut microbiome
🌿 Evidence-informed botanical medicine
😴 Improving sleep
🧘 Stress management strategies
💊 Targeted nutritional supplementation
🏃 Encouraging regular physical activity

Mental health is complex, and there is rarely a single cause or solution. The goal isn't to replace conventional care, but to identify contributing factors and create a comprehensive, individualized treatment plan that supports both the mind and the body.

Sometimes, improving your mood starts by taking a closer look at your gut.

🩸 **What Can a Liver Function Test Tell You?**

Your liver is one of the hardest-working organs in your body.

Every day it helps regulate blood sugar, metabolize medications, produce essential proteins, process hormones, store nutrients, and remove waste products. Despite its many responsibilities, liver disease often develops silently, with few or no symptoms in its early stages.

That's why a simple liver function test can be so valuable.

As a Naturopathic Doctor, I often review liver function tests when assessing patients with concerns such as:
✔️ Fatty liver disease
✔️ Elevated cholesterol or triglycerides
✔️ Diabetes or insulin resistance
✔️ Unexplained fatigue
✔️ Digestive complaints
✔️ Long-term medication use
✔️ Heavy alcohol consumption
✔️ Unexplained itching or jaundice

Abnormal results don't necessarily mean there is serious liver disease, but they do warrant further investigation to identify the underlying cause and determine the most appropriate next steps.

The good news? Many of the most common liver conditions—particularly fatty liver disease—can often be improved with targeted nutrition, regular physical activity, weight management when appropriate, limiting alcohol, and other evidence-based lifestyle strategies.

Understanding your blood work is one of the most powerful tools for protecting your long-term health. Sometimes, a routine blood test can uncover a problem long before symptoms appear.

If you've had recent blood work and aren't sure what your liver results mean, I'd be happy to help you interpret them in the context of your overall health.

Depression is more than just feeling sad—it can affect every aspect of a person's life, from energy and motivation to sleep, relationships, concentration, and overall health.

One of the most rewarding parts of my work as a Naturopathic Doctor is helping people who are struggling with depression through personalized natural therapies and lifestyle medicine.

Every patient is different. That's why I take the time to look beyond the symptoms and explore the many factors that can influence mental health, including nutrition, sleep quality, stress, physical activity, gut health, hormone balance, inflammation, nutrient deficiencies, and overall wellness.

Depending on the individual, a treatment plan may include:
🌿 Evidence-informed botanical medicine
🥗 Nutritional counselling
💊 Targeted nutritional supplementation
🏃 Lifestyle and exercise strategies
😴 Sleep optimization
🧠 Stress management and mind-body techniques

Natural medicine is not about replacing conventional care—it is about providing comprehensive, individualized care that addresses both symptoms and the underlying contributors to poor mental health. For some people, that means working alongside psychologists, counsellors, or family physicians to achieve the best possible outcomes.

If you've been struggling with your mood, know that you don't have to navigate it alone. There are many effective approaches available, and together we can develop a plan that's right for you.

Your mental health deserves the same attention and care as your physical health.

Botanical medicine is one of the treatment tools I regularly rely on in my naturopathic practice. 🌿

Plants have been used as medicine for generations, and today we can combine that traditional knowledge with modern research to support patients in a safe, thoughtful, and individualized way.

In practice, botanical medicine may be used to support digestion, inflammation, stress, sleep, hormone balance, immune health, and overall wellness. The key is not simply choosing “an herb,” but choosing the right herb, in the right form, at the right dose, for the right person.

That is where clinical training matters.

As a Naturopathic Doctor, I consider a patient’s health history, medications, lab work, symptoms, constitution, and treatment goals before recommending any botanical medicine. Natural does not always mean appropriate for everyone, and herbs can interact with medications or be unsuitable in certain health conditions.

When used properly, botanical medicine can be a powerful part of a broader treatment plan—alongside nutrition, lifestyle medicine, supplementation, and conventional medical care when needed.

At Aspire Natural Health, my goal is to use the best available tools to help patients address both symptoms and underlying causes of illness.

Happy Canada Day!

Today, I'm celebrating a country that has given me so much to be grateful for.

Long before I became a Naturopathic Doctor, I had the privilege of serving Canada as a Medical Assistant in the Canadian Armed Forces. For 18 years, I wore the uniform with pride, caring for fellow service members and learning the true meaning of service, resilience, teamwork, and compassion.

Those experiences helped shape who I am today. They instilled values that continue to guide my work at Aspire Natural Health—putting people first, serving with integrity, and doing everything I can to help others live healthier lives.

Canada is far from perfect, but it is a nation built on opportunity, diversity, freedom, and the willingness of people to care for one another. I feel incredibly fortunate to call this beautiful country home.

To my fellow Canadians—whether you've served, supported someone who has, or simply contribute to making our communities stronger every day—thank you.

Wishing everyone a safe, joyful, and memorable Canada Day.

Happy Birthday, Canada! ❤️
