“I just want something simple.”
We hear that a lot.
But here’s the interesting thing:
“Simple” means something different to almost everyone.
For one person, it may mean cremation with no service.
For another, it’s a small gathering with just family and close friends.
Someone else may still want the church, the flowers and the favourite songs — just nothing elaborate.
And sometimes, when someone says “simple,” what they really mean is:
“I don’t want my family to go through too much.”
That’s why we don’t assume.
We ask.
Because planning ahead isn’t about telling you what your goodbye should look like.
It’s about listening to what matters to you, showing you your options, and helping you make the choices that feel right for you.
So perhaps the question isn’t:
“How simple do you want it?”
It’s:
“What does simple mean to you?” 💚

One of the biggest myths about planning ahead is that it's something you do when you get older.
A young mom recently shared with me why she decided to plan ahead.
She said,
"If something happens to me, my children are too young to make those decisions."
Then she paused.
"And if something happens to one of my children... as a mother, I don't think I'd be able to make those decisions either."
That stopped me in my tracks.
Planning ahead isn't about expecting something to happen. It's about recognizing that life doesn't wait for a certain birthday.
None of us knows what tomorrow will bring.
But we do know this:
The people who love us shouldn't have to carry the burden of making impossible decisions during the hardest moments of their lives.
Planning ahead isn't about age. It's about love. It's about protecting the people who would one day have to make those decisions.
And that's something that matters whether you're 30, 50, or 80. 💚

Sometimes, the reason we choose the work we do is deeply personal.
For Luisa Serrano, becoming a Life Planner came from an experience she will never forget.
When her brother passed away suddenly without a plan in place, Luisa found herself doing what so many families have had to do — making important decisions at a time when she was also trying to grieve.
There were arrangements to make. Questions to answer. Decisions that couldn't wait.
It was an experience that stayed with her.
And eventually, it became part of the reason she chose to become an Alternatives Life Planner.
Today, when Luisa sits down with a family, she knows that the conversation they're having may seem like something that can wait.
But she also knows what it feels like when there is no more time.
For Luisa, Life Planning isn't simply about making arrangements in advance.
It's about giving a family something she wishes her own family had been given:
Peace. Clarity. And the space to simply be a family when it matters most.
That is the heart behind the work Luisa does today. ❤️
Meet Luisa Serrano — Alternatives Life Planner.

It’s one of the most common questions families ask us.
“Aldergrove feels so far from where we live.”
And we understand. In everyday life, distance matters.
But here’s something many families don’t realize:
You don’t have to go to Alternatives. Alternatives comes to you.
When it’s time to make arrangements, our Funeral Directors meet with families where it is most convenient for them.
There’s really no reason to make the trip to Aldergrove until the day of the service.
And on that day?
Distance somehow feels different.
Family and friends drive across cities. They come from other provinces. Sometimes they fly from halfway around the world.
Because when we gather to say goodbye to someone we love, we don’t ask how convenient the drive is.
We simply want to be there.
So when someone asks us, “Isn’t Alternatives too far?”
Perhaps the answer is simpler than we thought.
Until you need to be there, we come to you.And when the day comes, the people who matter will come too.

What About Me?
A daughter once asked her parents a question they weren't expecting.
They had always avoided talking about planning ahead.
Like many families, they would change the subject and say,
"Don't worry. We'll be fine."
One day they explained why.
"When Lolo and Lola passed away, we had Tita Maria. She took care of everything."
The daughter looked at them for a moment and quietly asked,
"But what about me?"
They didn't understand.
She continued,
"When it's your turn... what if Tita Maria isn't here anymore? Who's going to help me?"
The room fell silent.
Because the truth is, many families have a "Tita Maria."
A sister.
An aunt.
A family friend.
Someone who always seems to know what to do when life suddenly changes.
But "Tita Maria" isn't a plan.
She's someone we love.
And one day, she may need someone too.
Planning ahead isn't only about preparing for ourselves.
It's about making sure our children never have to ask,
"What about me?"
💚 If you think the day is today, we're here.

When Today Gets in the Way
Most of us don't put off important things because we don't care.
We put them off because today is busy.
There's work.
Bills.
Appointments.
Family responsibilities.
By the time the day is over, we tell ourselves,
"I'll think about it tomorrow."
And tomorrow quietly becomes next month.
Or next year.
It's not because we don't love our families.
In fact, it's often because we're so busy taking care of everyone else that we never find the time to take care of something important for ourselves.
Sometimes...
The hardest decisions aren't the ones we don't want to make.
They're the ones that never seem urgent enough to make today.
If today isn't your day, that's okay.
We understand.
But if you're reading this and quietly thinking,
"Maybe today is the day..."
💚 If you think the day is today, we're here.

Love Doesn't End with a Funeral ❤️
People often think a funeral is the end of a story.
We believe it's the continuation of a lifetime of love.
Every decision made in advance...Every conversation that brings clarity...Every plan that eases a family's burden...
Is one final act of love.
Because when we're gone, we can no longer comfort the people we love with our words.
But we can still comfort them with the decisions we made while we were here.
That's why planning isn't about preparing for death. It's about caring for the people who will continue living.
Love doesn't end with a funeral.
Sometimes, that's where one final expression of love is remembered the most.
💚 When you're ready to have that conversation, we're here.🔗 alternativeslifeplanners.ca/our-team

Our Most Important Family Conversations

Sometimes, the most meaningful family conversations don't happen during emergencies.
They happen over coffee.Around the dinner table.During a long drive.Or while everyone is simply enjoying time together.
We talk about vacations. We talk about work.We talk about our children and grandchildren.
But there is one conversation many families quietly avoid...

"What would you want if something happened to you?"

Not because we don't care.Often, it's because we care so much that we don't know how to begin.

At Alternatives Life Planners, we've learned that planning isn't really about paperwork. It's about making one of life's most difficult conversations a little easier for the people we love.

Sometimes, the greatest gift we can leave our family isn't something we give them after we're gone. It's the peace of mind of knowing they won't have to guess.

💚 When you're ready to have that conversation, we're here.🔗 alternativeslifeplanners.ca/our-team
