On Wednesday, we wore pink! Our team proudly wore pink shirts to raise awareness for breast cancer and show support for patients, families, colleagues, and loved ones affected by the disease. Together, we're helping spark important conversations about awareness, early detection, and support.

Did you know? Our Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) provides mammography services for women who are 40 years of age or older for breast cancer screening - no referral from a physician required! Women over 40 years may self-refer to the OBSP and book an appointment by calling: (705) 435-3377 ext. 1298.

This week we recognize our Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) Lead, Cailin, for her commitment to supporting a safe and healthy hospital environment. From providing education and guidance on IPAC best practices, to managing patient status and potential isolations, along with our hand hygiene compliance. She also works alongside teams supporting wound care needs as our wound care specialist. Her leadership helps keep infection prevention top of mind in all aspects of what we do.

Thank you for your leadership, collaboration and dedication to the health and safety of our patients, staff, physicians, volunteers and community. We appreciate all that you do!

Approximately 1 in 8 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. It is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers and although long-term mortality rates have dropped substantially, it still accounts for a significant portion of cancer-related deaths in Canada.

The best way to protect yourself is to be screened every two years after age 40, or younger in people with higher genetic risk. When breast cancer is found and treated early, the chances of successful treatment are better.

This Healthcare Safety and Security Week, we recognize the security professionals who help make Stevenson Memorial Hospital a safe and welcoming place for everyone.

From responding to emergencies and de-escalating difficult situations to supporting parking lot safety and protecting our facility, our Security team brings professionalism, vigilance and a calm presence to their work every day.

On October 15, Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day, we acknowledge and remember these losses, as well as the unique grief bereaved parents experience. Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day also provides the opportunity to show support to the many families across Canada who have suffered the loss of a pregnancy or the death of an infant.

The day is observed with remembrance ceremonies, candle-lighting vigils, and concludes with the International Wave of Light.

The International Wave of Light invites participants from around the world to light a candle at 7 p.m. in their respective time zones and to leave the candle burning for at least an hour. The result is a continuous chain of light spanning the globe for a 24-hour period in honour and remembrance of the children who passed away in pregnancy or as infants.
