We are incredibly grateful to We're Here For You Canada for their generous donation of Comfort Kits to our SANE program💜🩵

Founded by Sarah Sherman, a survivor of domestic violence and sexual assault, We're Here For You Canada was created to address a gap in care that she experienced firsthand. After undergoing a forensic examination, Sarah was discharged from the hospital without clothing, comfort items, or clear support. Realizing that so many survivors across Canada were facing the same experience, she was inspired to create an organization dedicated to ensuring survivors receive compassion, dignity, and practical support during one of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.

Each Comfort Kit is thoughtfully assembled with personal care items, comfort items, treats, helpful information, and other essentials, all packaged in a discreet bag for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault to take home. While these kits provide practical necessities, they also offer comfort, dignity, and a reminder that survivors are not alone.💜🫂

Thank you to Sarah, Blayne, and everyone at We're Here For You Canada for your compassion, generosity, and unwavering commitment to supporting survivors with care.

“We don’t understand that substances can be a trauma response—so we punish people for how they cope.”

We’re often quick to judge how someone learned to survive, but forget to ask what they had to survive.

In this clip, trauma therapist Kristina Fifield talks about the fear and bias she sees in community spaces, healthcare, and policing when it comes to substance use—and how labels like borderline personality disorder are too often weaponized against women and gender‑diverse people instead of opening the door to support.

Violence doesn’t start with a headline.

It starts in workplaces, homes, and communities where warning signs are ignored and harm is quietly normalized.

In this episode of the One Door Podcast, trauma therapist and social worker Kristina Fifield joins Alex to unpack the long history behind the 2020 mass casualty in Nova Scotia—from serial perpetrators and missed interventions to how workplaces, diagnoses, and media narratives can either reinforce or challenge gender‑based violence.

What happens when violence becomes so common that it no longer sounds the alarm?

“For 18 years, I’ve seen the same patterns: the same serial perpetrators, the same institutions, the same systems that normalize violence until it’s part of the wallpaper.”

Trauma therapist Kristina Fifield has seen the warning signs repeat—while systems miss opportunities to intervene and underfunded frontline organizations are left supporting survivors. 💜
