☀️ Summer travels are almost here! Which means family road trips, vacations, and weekend adventures are just around the corner! ☀️

Before you hit the road, take a few minutes to check your child's car seat. It could save their life.

Car seats reduce the risk of fatal injury by up to:
✅ 71% for infants
✅ 54% for toddlers

Why are they so important?
👶 Children's bodies are still developing, making them more vulnerable to injury in a collision.
🛡️ Rear-facing seats provide the best protection for a child's head, neck, and spine.
🏥 Properly used car seats reduce hospitalization risk for children under 4 by up to 67%.
⚠️ An unrestrained child can be seriously injured or ejected during a crash.

Ontario law requires children to be properly secured in an approved car seat or booster seat based on their age, weight, and height.

✔️ Make sure your child's seat is installed correctly (it should move less than 2.5 cm/1 inch at the belt path).
✔️ Keep children rear facing as long as possible.
✔️ Ensure the 5-point harness is snug and properly positioned.
✔️ Check the expiry date on your car seat. Most expire 6-10 years after manufactured.

Wondering if your child is ready to stop using a booster seat? Use the 5 Step Test:
1️⃣ Sit all the way back against the vehicle seat
2️⃣ Knees bend comfortably at the edge of the seat
3️⃣ Shoulder belt crosses the collarbone
4️⃣ Lap belt sits low on the upper thighs
5️⃣ Child can stay seated properly for the entire trip

They must pass ALL 5 steps before using a seat belt alone.

There was Dad. The original safety trainer, whose every lesson came bundled with a terrible joke and an even worse pun.

Happy Father's Day to all the dads and OG safety trainers who taught us some of our very first lessons in staying safe... even if they made us groan while doing it! 😆

🚨 Important Update: Changes to Ontario Workplace First Aid Training Names Effective June 22, 2026 🚨

At 13 First Aid and Safety Training, we want to keep our learners and workplace partners informed of important changes affecting first aid certification in Ontario. 👇

What's Changing?
Effective June 22, 2026, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) is adopting new naming conventions for workplace first aid training as part of a national effort to standardize first aid programming across Canada.

The following course names will change:
✅ Emergency First Aid → Basic First Aid
✅ Standard First Aid → Intermediate First Aid

What Does This Mean for You?
While there are some minor updates to course content, 13 First Aid has already implemented these enhancements ahead of the transition, ensuring your training remains current and compliant.

Current Certificates Remain Valid:
All valid certificates issued before June 22, 2026 will continue to be recognized and remain valid until their normal expiry date.
You do not need to retake your training or renew your certification early because of these changes.

New Certificates:
Certificates issued after June 22, 2026 will reflect the new course names and standards adopted by WSIB:
* Basic First Aid (formerly Emergency First Aid)
* Intermediate First Aid (formerly Standard First Aid)

Recertification Remains the Same:
Learners certified in Intermediate First Aid (formerly Standard First Aid) may continue to alternate between full courses and recertification courses, provided all eligibility requirements are met.

Heading to the cottage this weekend?
Remember that cottages are required to have working smoke alarms, and we recommend having them in your RV or camper as well.

Pack some fresh batteries and a smoke or CO alarm in the event yours aren't functioning properly. This way, you can enjoy your stay knowing that you and your family are safe!

This is an important reminder that having a home safety plan, along with working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, can make a real difference in an emergency.

Many people assume help is only minutes away, but depending on where you live and the size of the area your local emergency services cover, response times can vary significantly.

Take a few minutes to make sure your smoke and CO detectors are working, review your family's escape plan, and identify a safe meeting place outside the home. Having a plan in place before an emergency happens can help protect the people who matter most.

🚨 Test your alarms monthly.
🚨 Replace batteries as recommended.
🚨 Practice your escape plan with everyone in the household.
🚨 Make sure everyone knows your designated meeting spot.

Preparation doesn't take long, but it can save lives.

We were asked recently why we constantly post about having an escape plan & working smoke & CO detectors.

The short answer is it's the law to have working detectors in your home. We also want to know you're all safe. Our department has 2 halls, Eganville & Foymount, to cover 593 square kilometers. While we respond as fast as we can it gives us some peace of mind knowing a working detector means you & your family have been alerted to danger, are out of your residence and safe. Material things can be replaced...people can't. 🚒👩‍🚒👨‍🚒🚒
