💥 “I threw my back out!”

This is one of the most common things we hear in the clinic. But what actually happened?

In many cases, “throwing your back out” isn’t because your back suddenly became damaged or injured. More often, it’s the result of a protective muscle spasm.

When your body senses a potential threat—whether from fatigue, overload, stress, poor sleep, a sudden movement, or an irritated joint—it may respond by increasing muscle tension around the area. This creates the feeling of stiffness, tightness, and pain that can make it difficult to stand up straight, bend over, or move comfortably.

While this protective response is designed to help, it can sometimes become excessive. The increased tension can make the area more sensitive, restrict movement, and prolong discomfort.

The good news? Most episodes improve with time and appropriate management.

Osteopathic treatment, physiotherapy, exercise, and other evidence-informed approaches can help:
✅ Reduce excessive muscle tension
✅ Improve mobility and movement confidence
✅ Calm sensitivity in the area
✅ Support a faster return to normal activities

Pain does not always equal damage. Sometimes your body’s alarm system is simply turned up too high.

If you’ve recently “thrown your back out,” don’t panic. In most cases, staying active within your tolerance and seeking appropriate treatment can help get you moving again.

How long does it take to become pain free?🤔

Many people think that treatment is:
Adjust ➡️ Feel Better ➡️ Done

But our bodies are adaptive systems.

What care actually is:
Signal ➡️ Repetition ➡️ Adaptation

Your body changes because of repeated, consistent input over a period of time.

One visit can:
1️⃣ Reduce tension
2️⃣ Improvement movement
3️⃣ Change how you feel

But it does not:
1️⃣ Undo years of stress/strain
2️⃣ Retrain movement patterns
3️⃣ Create lasting adaptation

A treatment plan with consistent inputs will:
⚪️ Reinforce better movement
⚪️ Retrain the nervous system
⚪️ Build stability
⚪️ Reduce compensation
⚪️ Increased resilience

That way, in due time - less (or no) treatment will be necessary to maintain your structural health goals.

Bodies don’t change instantly. Progress needs repetitions.

✨ Self-Care Isn’t Selfish — It’s Essential ✨

✔️ Take a walk and breathe deeply
✔️ Drink more water than you think you need
✔️ Stretch your body (especially areas holding tension)
✔️ Prioritize quality sleep
✔️ Unplug from screens for a little while
✔️ Eat nourishing, whole foods
✔️ Book an osteopathic treatment or massage
✔️ Slow down — your nervous system will thank you

Your body works hard for you. Take care of it. 🤍
