Some clinicians here are person-centred, but what does that mean?

Person-centred therapy is an approach that believes that people already carry the direction of their own growth. What they need isn't advice, but conditions safe enough to hear themselves think.

Three of those conditions are a therapist's empathy, authenticity, and unconditional positive regard. That last one means being accepted exactly as you are, without evaluation. Not "you're doing great," but "you don't have to earn a place here."

It sounds soft. In practice it's demanding—for the therapist as much as the client.

In physics, every action has an equal (in size) and opposite (in direction) reaction. Psychology isn’t physics, but it sure seems like our actions also shape us in some way. Feeling a sense of pride, satisfaction, meaning, skill, confidence, joy, guilt, regret, and shame are just a few examples of the ways our actions can change us, depending on what we do or create. In what ways are your actions changing you?

If you win and your partner loses, you both lose.

So many couples get stuck here. Locked in battles over who’s right, who remembers correctly, and who started it.

But when you make being right more important than being connected, you turn your partner into your opponent.

And that is the moment that you stop being intimate.

I teach that the relational answer to the question, “Who’s right?” is “Who cares?”

Objectivity has no place in close personal relationships.

As a healthy couple, you must be willing to drop your case, step out of the courtroom, and ask yourself:

“Am I trying to make things better? Or am I trying to win?”

One builds connection. The other destroys it.

The dance of distancing and pursuit is a classic one for couples in conflict. Couple therapy can help disrupt the dance and change the music, and make greater closeness possible.

We expect much from our partners, and our relationships often benefit from holding more realistic expectations of them.

These things happen in relationships. The most important thing here is to learn to repair after ruptures in connection.
