Many dancers normalize warning signs because “everyone has it.”

But pain, pinching, constant tightness, and compression are often your body’s way of saying a movement strategy, load, or mobility restriction needs attention.

Common in dance? Yes.
Normal? No.

The good news: most of these patterns can improve with the right approach.

Needles aren’t built with passive flexibility alone.

This one is personal for me.

Even when I had my splits, I still struggled to hold my leg anywhere near split position. I had the range… but not the strength and control to own it. I also had a tendency to use my back flexibility to fake my way through. More on that in future posts!

That’s something many dancers experience.

A beautiful needle requires more than stretching:• active hip flexor strength• glute control• core stability• balance• end-range coordination

If you only chase flexibility, progress can stall.

Sometimes the missing piece isn’t more range — it’s learning to control the range you already have.

Train the position, not just the stretch.

Save this drill and add it to your training 2–3x/week.

If you feel like you’ve been stretching forever and your splits aren’t improving… you’re not alone.

Most dancers are told to just “stretch more,” but that’s usually not the issue.

Your body needs:
• the right position
• the right strength
• the right sense of control

When you train those things, flexibility tends to improve much faster—and with less frustration (and fewer injuries).

If your splits feel stuck, there’s almost always a reason.

The awards won’t matter. You’ll remember the days you nailed it, and laugh at the times you didn’t. What you will miss the most is getting to perform with your friends. Getting to practice something for months and finally getting it. The numbers where you felt invincible. The judges words and scores won’t last, so use them to make yourself better and then move on. The feeling you get on stage and through competitions is what will stick with you. Enjoy every minute ❤️. * Roxanne used to be “my song”. I love that I get to watch you all perform it 😍

Different doesn’t mean limited.
It means individual.

Your structure influences your movement—but it doesn’t define your potential.

Soreness isn’t always a sign to stop.
Often, it’s your body showing you where it’s not quite prepared for the demands you’re placing on it.
Instead of avoiding it, build it up—gradually and intentionally.
Your body adapts to what you expose it to.
If something keeps getting sore, get curious.
