Midwives of York Region

Midwives of York Region MYR is a midwifery clinic that serves the York Region community. With privileges at Southlake Health. We are a practice of ten Registered Midwives.

We offer a choice of birthplace: home or hospital. We hold admitting and discharge privileges at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket. We work in teams to offer 24-hour oncall availability. Our office is located in Aurora.

“Increasing numbers of Canadian women are choosing midwives for four main reasons: midwives' philosophy of childbirth as a natural process, involving a wholistic and

supportive approach; continuity of care throughout the childbearing year, which fosters safety and respect; cultural and political factors; and most importantly, the maintenance of a sense of control over their birth experience.”
”A brief overview of why women choose midwifery care ” by Annemarie van Oploo, BScN

“Midwives have been part of the human experience for as long as we know. The Latin term cum-mater and the Spanish and Portuguese term comadre, have the same meaning: with woman. At the present time, there is no doubt that midwives offer women safe, effective care with good outcomes; now midwives ourselves are looking at our practice to see just what we do that makes this so. We believe that the answer lies in our name; that is, we are ‘with women.’”

In a recent episode of the Small Change podcast with Doreen Nicoll, AOM Director of Government, Labour and Public Relations and midwife Elizabeth Brandeis explains why Ontario midwives need access to a fair dispute resolution process when negotiating with the provincial government.

The conversation explores:
• Why the current bargaining framework falls short
• How binding arbitration can help address structural power imbalances
• Issues of recruitment, retention and long-term sustainability of midwifery care in Ontario

Look at that, halfway through summer and the babies just keep coming… but I guess that’s all the time!

Congratulations to all these families who’ve welcomed their summer babies amongst heat waves and thunderstorms. With 1/3 of the month have 2 births a day, our midwives have sure been busy!

June brought 22 MYR babies! The craziest thing is more than half of them shared their birth days with one or two others! Which means only 50% of the days in June had a birth; well for MYR!

Congratulations to all these families! We hope you are managing to stay cool!

Help us welcome the newest member of the Midwives of York Region team! Morgan will be doing some clinic in the months to come and will start in September with us!

Welcome Morgan, we’re excited to work with you!

“Hi everyone!
My name is Morgan, and I am very excited to be working at Midwives of York Region. I was born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario, where I completed a Biology degree at Carleton University and then found myself looking into Midwifery. In 2020 decided to apply to the Midwifery Program at Toronto Metropolitan University and completed my studies in 2024. I have worked in birth work, foster care and research with different organizations for over 7 years. This has given me the opportunity to grow my understanding of the importance of birthwork, compassionate care, and building relationships. I strive to always provide care that empowers each individual person and will always provide the knowledge needed for informed decision making.
Outside of Midwifery you can usually find me at local farmers markets, bingo nights, or out for a walk with my dog. My hobbies are downhill skiing, hiking and camping.
I am extremely lucky to have the privilege of being present in your pregnancy, birth and postpartum journeys.”
