A little update from Hopelchén! 💙

These past days have been full of learning, serving, and so many reminders of why I fell in love with midwifery. I've been spending my days at the clinic, supporting women and newborns, learning from incredible teacher John Morgan Crowson and fellow students, and continuing to grow in both knowledge and confidence as a student midwife.

I'm so grateful to God for the way He continues to open doors, provide opportunities, and faithfully guide each step of this journey. Following this dream hasn't always been easy, but seeing His hand at work along the way has been such an encouragement. Thank you to everyone who has prayed for me, supported me, and helped make this opportunity possible. I truly couldn't do it without you. 🩵

Labor often progresses more efficiently when the mother feels safe, relaxed, supported, hydrated, nourished, and free to move. Helpful things can include walking, changing positions, swaying, hands-and-knees, squatting, using a peanut ball, warm water, massage, breathing techniques, emptying the bladder regularly, and resting when exhausted. Movement and positioning can help baby descend and rotate properly, while reducing stress helps the body produce oxytocin naturally and work more effectively.

Some additional methods that may help in certain situations include ni**le stimulation, membrane sweeps, or medical augmentation such as when necessary. A stalled labor can sometimes indicate exhaustion, dehydration, or baby positioning issues that need attention.

I’m pretty strong-willed and straightforward — the “say it like it is and get things done” type. I care deeply, love fiercely, and tend to show up for people in practical ways more than fancy ones. I’m not everyone’s cup of tea, and honestly, I’m okay with that. I’d rather be genuine than try to be everything to everyone.

Home and family are the center of my world. Life isn’t all sunshine and perfect moments — I’ve got teens, big emotions, growing pains, and the beautiful chaos that comes with raising kids — but we’re learning and growing together. The hard seasons have shaped me, softened me, and made me stronger.

A big part of my heart is also with moms and babies. I work as a doula and I’m studying toward midwifery, something I’ve felt called to for years. My dream is to someday open a peaceful, healing, mom-focused Birth Centre where women feel safe, supported, and truly cared for.

These days I’m focused on healing, building a calm home, chasing that dream step by step, and appreciating the simple things — quiet mornings, good conversations, and lots of laughter.

If you’re here, thanks for being part of my little corner of the world. I’m glad you’re here 🤍

Natural and Practical Ways to Boost Vitamin K.

Besides the infant vitamin K shot or oral dosage given at most routine births in hospitals, there are other ways a woman can boost her vitamin K levels, which are then passed on to her baby.
Vitamin K is necessary for the clotting of blood to prevent hemorrhage.
Newborns have low levels of vitamin K for several reasons, including, at birth, because their intestines are not finished developing, their gut microbiota, which synthesizes vitamin K, is not established yet. If bleeding happens in newborns with low levels of vitamin K, VKDB (Vitamin K Deficiency Bleeding) occurs. Blood cannot clot as needed and it can be fatal.
This is why the vitamin K shot (or oral vitamin K drops) are recommended for newborns.
Your diet and gut health are very important.
A healthy intestinal flora supports better absorption and natural vitamin K production in the body, which means there's more available to pass on to baby. During pregnancy, mom's vitamin K is passed on to her baby through the bloodstream.
Talking to your doctor or midwife about which vitamin K supplement is right for you is a great idea, but there are some foods that increase vitamin K levels in you and your breastfed baby as well.
Foods like kale, collard greens, spinach, turnip greens, mustard greens, and other vegetables of the dark leafy types are higher in vitamin K. Consume these with moderate amounts of healthy oils like olive oil, as vitamin K is a fat soluble vitamin.
It needs fat globules to be absorbed and transported through the bloodstream. If you are cooking the greens, add oil after cooking and draining the water off.
After birth, a breastfed baby receives vitamin K via the breast milk. Exclusive breastfeeding ensures an ongoing supply of small but steady amounts of vitamin K through breast milk.

Allow baby to nurse long enough to reach the hind milk. Hind milk is richer in fats and contains higher amounts of fat soluble vitamins like vitamin K. Offering full feeds instead of switching sides too quickly helps baby to receive those nutrients.
