Here’s what many people do not understand about butch identity.
Butch people have often been misunderstood because society has created narrow ideas about what gender expression, masculinity, and identity are supposed to look like.
But butchness has never been about fitting into someone else’s expectations.
For many people, being butch is about authenticity.
It can be about feeling at home in your body, expressing yourself honestly, connecting with community, and existing in a way that feels true.
Some common myths about butch identity include:
🫧 Butch people are trying to be men.
🫧 Butch people all look the same.
🫧 Butch people are not emotional or caring.
🫧 Butch identity is outdated.
🫧 Butch experiences are all the same.
The reality is that butch identities are diverse, complex, and deeply personal.
Butch people can be soft and strong.
They can be masculine and emotionally expressive.
They can be confident while still navigating discrimination, misunderstanding, and pressure from the world around them.
Celebrating Butch Appreciation Day is about recognizing the history, resilience, and contributions of butch communities.
It is also about creating space for people to exist without needing to justify who they are.
