Accommodating shift work schedules and making room for last-minute appointments after particularly tough shifts is all part of the gig, but please bear with me while I try to keep up and wake up. 😬

That being said, going home, getting some sleep, and then coming to therapy is also a perfectly acceptable option. Because sometimes we need the adrenaline to come down a bit. šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Ø

At the end of the day, therapy needs to work around the realities of your job, not the other way around. Even if that means one of us is running on adrenaline and the other is running on caffeine. ā˜•ļø

Okay but humour me for a second… šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

Want to know my favourite part about working with first responders? How direct they can be. 🫔

Finding the right therapeutic fit is important, especially when you’re part of a unique population with a different workplace culture and style of communicating.

Your therapist doesn’t need to have lived your experience, but they should understand the population you’re a part of and be willing to meet you where you’re at.

And sometimes that means being told, very directly, that your therapeutic approach is getting a little too ā€œwooā€. 😬

One of my favourite parts of working with first responders is getting a glimpse into a world most people never see. And getting to ask the questions I just can’t google šŸ˜

Sometimes we just talk shop. Laugh at the dark humour, and I get to live vicariously through your stories. Because therapy shouldn’t be the thing you dread the most. We have fun too!

Just don’t forget why you’re here… because eventually I’ll circle back to those pesky questions about your feelings. Occupational hazard. šŸš“šŸš‘šŸš’

I’m not saying it’s always your childhood… but I’m also not not saying that. šŸ‘€

Your childhood isn’t a life sentence. It’s just one chapter that helps explain why your nervous system, relationships, and coping strategies developed the way they did. Understanding the ā€œwhyā€ can make it a whole lot easier to change the ā€œwhat.ā€ ā€¼ļø

So that’s why we’re always digging in on the early years. Your brain has a backstory and once we understand where the pattern started, we can start creating a new ending. ✨

Get ready for the interrogation… except you’re on the other side this time. šŸ‘€

I don’t usually make content about my work with first responders, but it’s probably time I started because the humour is just too good not to share šŸ˜…

But beneath the humour is a lot of respect. Building trust takes time, and I know that walking into therapy isn’t easy. Especially when you’re used to staying guarded for a living. 🫔

Rapport always comes first. I never expect trust on day one, and I definitely don’t expect more than one word answers. I’ll earn those. And hopefully a couple laughs along the way 😬

Working memory is your brain’s ability to hold onto information long enough to actually use it — like remembering to book that appointment you swore you wouldn’t forget this time. šŸ˜‚

With ADHD, that information doesn’t always stay ā€œonlineā€ when attention shifts (aka the second you walk into another room or see literally anything else šŸ‘€).

Reminders, calendars, alarms, and notes aren’t cheating — they’re accommodations. Work with your brain, not against it. 🫔

Sometimes the insight lands…loudly šŸ™Š

So we process AND we repair 😬

Therapy isn’t just validation. Sometimes it’s being challenged in ways that don’t feel great in the moment. We won’t always get it right either, but finding a therapist that you can give that feedback to is important. If something doesn’t land right, we talk about it. (Sometimes we even laugh about it) šŸ˜…

Always remember: we’re still on your team! 🫶

Your therapist’s alter ego after they’ve run out of patience at the end of the day šŸ˜…

I tried being gentle but if you’re coming to work with mom, being a therapy dog is serious business… aka no napping sir šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļøšŸ„±

Disclaimer: this is a very much a joke. No one in this office would ever be motivated with shame or threats and compassion doesn’t clock out šŸ’›

Also the fact that he’s entirely unbothered by me means you’ll find him here snoring all day long. šŸ¦›

03/26/2026

And even though we can’t quite remember the exact words, it’s the meaning that will always stay with us. 🫶

Disclaimer: this reel is for comedic purposes only, and is not reflective of clinical practice. Your therapist should be respecting confidentiality—your privacy should always be protected and we don’t share what happens in sessions outside of sessions. šŸ”

But we do love to reflect on the magical breakthroughs and growth ✨ and make our community laugh a little 🤣
