When people ask "How are you?" , many of us automatically answer, "I'm fine."

But sometimes "fine" isn't actually fine.
Sometimes we're functional.

We're showing up to work. Taking care of our families. Answering texts. Paying bills. Smiling when we need to. From the outside, everything looks okay.

But internally, we're exhausted. Overwhelmed. Running on empty. Just trying to make it through the day.

Being functional doesn't always mean we're doing well.

This is an important reminder that someone can be accomplishing everything on their to-do list while still struggling emotionally. And maybe that's true for you, too.

If you're functional but not fine, you're not alone. You don't have to earn support by falling apart. You don't have to wait until you're in crisis to reach out.

Sometimes the strongest thing we can do is be honest about how we're really doing.

đź’™ Functional and fine are not the same thing.

When stress, anxiety, or overwhelm show up, it's not just happening in our minds - it's happening in our bodies, too.

Somatic techniques can help us reconnect with our bodies, calm our nervous systems, and create a greater sense of safety and grounding in the present moment.

The best part? Many of these tools are simple, accessible, and can be used almost anywhere.

đź’™ Which of these soothing techniques have you tried, or which one would you like to try next?

Our brains are always learning from how we respond. When we react to a sensation with alarm or urgency, the brain can interpret it as danger - and this often turns up the volume on whatever we are feeling.

What if, instead of fighting it, we got curious?
Not every sensation needs fixing. Sometimes, it just needs space to be felt, so it can pass.

Anger often gets a bad reputation - but it's not always the only issue happening.

Many times, our anger shows up as a protector emotion. It steps in to shield us from feelings that can be harder to sit with (like hurt, fear, rejection, shame, etc).

Anger gives us a sense of strength and control. But underneath, there’s often something more vulnerable asking for attention.

Next time your anger shows up, try getting curious:
👉 What might this be protecting me from?
👉 What am I really feeling right now?

When we understand the message behind the anger, we can respond in a way that actually supports all of our needs (not just in a way that protects us on the surface).

Ever notice how good it feels to just take a deep breath and let out a long sigh? That's because it’s something your body is designed to do, to help you stay in balance.

A psychological sigh is a simple breathing pattern:
👉 inhale through your nose
👉 take a second quick "top-off" inhale
👉 then slowly exhale through your mouth

This pattern helps “reset” your nervous system. It can reduce stress, calm anxiety, and bring your body out of that tense, overwhelmed state (often within seconds).

You can use it anytime:
• before responding in a stressful moment
• when you feel overwhelmed
• to help your body settle before sleep

Try it 2–3 times in a row and notice how your body feels after.

Sometimes the simplest tools are the most powerful.

For most of us who over the age of 10, the process of making friends can seem exhausting and time consuming. Knowing where and how to start can often make things a little easier.

Join us for this FREE in-person event on Tuesday May 26th - "Making Friends In The Adult World". The evening will kick off with a light supper at 5:30pm - the Workshop will run from 6:00pm to 7:30pm - and there will be some time for mingling afterward.

This Workshop will help participants learn more about the key elements needed to smooth out the process of forging long-lasting and meaningful adult friendships (at all ages).

"Making Friends In The Adult World" is being offered in partnership with Leduc FCSS, and is being facilitated by Kim Silverthorn BA, MPCC, CT of Tacit Knowledge. Kim has 35 years of experience as a therapist, and often works with families/agencies who are trying to effectively address the mental health challenges that exist in their lives.

There’s a difference between feeling your emotions and thinking about them.

Intellectualizing sounds like:
“I understand why I feel this way.”
“I’ve analyzed the situation.”
“I can explain it perfectly.”

But feeling sounds like:
“This hurts.”
“I’m overwhelmed.”
“I don’t have the words yet… but I’m here with it.”

You can understand your emotions deeply… and still not actually feel them.

Healing doesn’t just happen in your head — it happens when you allow yourself to experience what’s there, without rushing to explain it away 💛

Sometimes when we’re feeling low, it’s can be hard to figure out why it's happening - and what to do to start to make it better.

Believe it or not, it's probably easier than you realize!

Are you feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, or constantly stressed? Are you struggling with achiness, weight gain, acne or irritated skin, sleep issues, low energy, anxiety, or depression? Are you finding it hard to concentrate, or to remember things - or to be as creative as you would like?

These could all be signs that you are producing too much (or too little) cortisol - one our main stress hormones. High cortisol especially can affect your physical health - your mental focus, memory and motivation - and your emotional well-being/regulation.

Join us via Zoom on April 28th – 6:00pm to 8:30pm (MST) – for a FREE Workshop focusing on "How To Manage Cortisol Levels Naturally".

In this Workshop, you will learn:

*How to recognize the warnings signs, when you are producing too much/little cortisol;
* How to dump excess cortisol from your system, when it is being overproduced (to lessen the problem side effects);
*Natural strategies for enhancing the production of other chemicals in your system, to keep your cortisol in proper balance.

This FREE Workshop is being facilitated by Kim Silverthorn, BA, MPCC, CT of Tacit Knowledge - in partnership with Beaumont FCSS. *Everyone is welcome - you do NOT need to be a Beaumont resident to participate.

Please contact Beaumont FCSS at 780-929-1006 or [email protected] to register and to access the Zoom link.
