🌱 Spring is herb-gathering season! 🌱

One of my favorite ways to connect with the season is by harvesting some of the incredible plants growing right in our own backyards and forests.

So far this spring we've gathered:

🌼 Dandelions – destined for homemade jelly! In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), dandelion (Pu Gong Ying) is valued for its ability to clear Heat, support the Liver, and promote healthy detoxification. It's also packed with nutrients and makes a surprisingly delicious jelly.

🌿 Wormwood – collected for tinctures. This intensely bitter herb has a long history in Western herbalism as a digestive tonic, and antiparasitic. Traditionally, it has been used to stimulate appetite, support healthy digestion, and encourage the body's natural digestive processes. A little goes a long way with this powerful plant!

🌲 Spruce Tips – this spring's new favorite! These bright green tips make a refreshing forest soda and are rich in vitamin C. While not traditionally used in Chinese medicine, they have long been appreciated in many herbal traditions for supporting respiratory health and providing a welcome burst of springtime energy.

Spring is the season of the Liver in TCM—a time of growth, movement, and renewal. Getting outside, connecting with nature, and working with seasonal plants is a wonderful way to support your health and stay in rhythm with the season.

What wild herbs or plants are you gathering this spring? 🌱✨

We’ve made it to the final piece of our Nutrigenomics 101 series! 🎉

Let’s talk about ApoE—a small but incredibly impactful protein with a big role in brain health. Your ApoE type can influence how your body processes fats and may be linked to your risk of cognitive aging over time.

Now, before that sounds intimidating, here’s the empowering part: this is information you can use. Knowing your ApoE type isn’t about fear—it’s about insight. It gives you the opportunity to make targeted nutrition and lifestyle choices that support and protect your brain for the long haul.

Think of it as your roadmap to more personalized, proactive, and neuroprotective care. 🧠

We’re getting close to the end of our nutrigenomics series—next up: vitamins! ✨

Not all bodies process vitamins the same way. Some people easily convert water-soluble vitamins into their active, usable forms… and for others, it’s a bit more of a challenge.

And then there’s vitamin D 👀
Your Vitamin D receptor (VDR) is genetically coded, and in some people, it’s less efficient at absorbing and using vitamin D. This can mean that the standard 800 IU/day just isn’t enough for optimal health.

✨ The question is… are you taking the form your body actually needs? Find out what you book a nutrigenomics test at Ascensionacupuncture.ca

Alright, jumping back into our nutrigenomics series after a busy few weeks! 😅

This week we’re talking all about glutathione—your body’s master detox molecule.

Did you know that some people naturally produce plenty of glutathione, while others make much less? This matters more than you might think. Glutathione plays a critical role in how your body processes toxins, supports liver function, and protects your cells from damage.

It’s especially important when it comes to medications like Tylenol. If you’re a low glutathione producer, your body may have a harder time safely processing it—meaning a higher risk of liver stress or damage compared to someone with optimal levels.

Histamine intolerance isn’t just about food reactions 👀

Your body relies on an enzyme called DAO (diamine oxidase) to break down excess histamine in foods — especially in the gut. When DAO levels are low or overwhelmed, histamine can build up and trigger symptoms like headaches, hives, anxiety, insomnia, PMS flares, sinus congestion, or digestive upset.

It’s not always the histamine… sometimes it’s your ability to clear it.

Supporting gut health, reducing inflammation, and strengthening your body’s natural detox pathways can make a big difference 💛

Your mood isn’t random — it’s biochemical.

MAO is a critical enzyme that helps keep brain chemistry balanced by clearing out excess neurotransmitters. When this pathway isn’t functioning optimally, it can impact how calm, energized, or emotionally steady you feel. All from a little enzyme. Cool, right!?

Ever heard of COMT? It’s become quite the buzzword in the natural health world lately — and for good reason!

COMT is an enzyme responsible for breaking down key neurotransmitters like dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine — the very chemicals that influence our mood, focus, motivation, and stress response.

The gene that directs this enzyme is often nicknamed the “warrior or worrier gene,” because subtle genetic differences can influence how calmly (or intensely!) we respond to life’s stressors.
