Today, Quinte Health and the Trenton Memorial Hospital Foundation were pleased to recognize the inaugural recipients of the Shannan Hickey Memorial Education Endowment.

Shannan, a beloved Quinte Health nurse whose life was cut short due to intimate partner violence, was remembered for her compassion, warmth, and deep commitment to caring for others.

Created in partnership with Shannan’s father, Matt Hickey, the endowment supports ongoing education and professional development opportunities for Quinte Health staff, helping carry forward Shannan’s passion for learning and dedication to patient care.

Presented at the Shannan’s Light monument outside Belleville General Hospital, the awards recognized 12 team members whose commitment to growth and excellence reflects the spirit of the endowment itself. Matt Hickey and Shannan’s grandmother, Dorothy, helped determine the inaugural recipients and personally handed out the awards.

Congratulations to: Sandra Zogo, Emma Cripps, Michelle Caoile, Serena Cross, Karen Grouchy, Maria Stephen, Amy Rundle, Tara White, Star Maughan, Kelly Hughey, Sarah Backus, and Kelly Lavallee.

Through learning, kindness, and community, Shannan’s legacy continues to make a lasting impact across Quinte Health.

When an abnormal lab result appears for a cancer patient, every minute counts.

Today, Quinte Health’s oncology team sees those results instantly through Lumeo, the region’s shared health information system. Instead of relying on printed reports and manual follow-up, care teams can securely communicate through the system in real time, with conversations and next steps becoming part of the patient’s chart for the entire care team to see.

For oncology patients whose care often spans Belleville and Kingston, this means a fully connected circle of care. Teams at both hospitals can see the same patient chart in real time, helping ensure faster decisions and more coordinated treatment.

“We have always had strong safety checks and verification processes, but before this system, some of those checks required looking across multiple systems and piecing information together,” said Natalie Hart, Patient Care Lead of Quinte Health’s Dr. Douglas A. MacIntosh Cancer Clinic. “Being able to see everything in one place improves how we care for patients. We spend less time searching for information and can focus on what really matters: the patient, their treatment and well-being.”

“Today I attended TMH for my annual mammogram. I was immediately impressed by the responsive volunteers who greeted me at the door and directed me to where I needed to go. I found the signage throughout the hospital extremely helpful and clear. And the mammogram technician, Glenda, was a delight! She was kind and reassuring and had me out in no time! I had a completely positive experience. Thanks so much!”

There’s exciting progress at the new Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital (PECMH) build!

Yesterday, crews poured and levelled the concrete floor across key areas of the new hospital, including the main lobby, ambulatory clinic, auxiliary and foundation spaces.

This milestone helps prepare the space for the next phase of construction on the main level, with crews expected to begin bringing in construction equipment and elevated work platforms next week to continue interior work.

Step by step, the future of care in Prince Edward County is taking shape!

Today, Quinte Health marks our first annual Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) Awareness Day.

We lowered our flags in memory of our colleague, Shannan Hickey, and in recognition of all those who have lost their lives to intimate partner violence.

At sunset, our teams will place and light flameless candles in windows and visible spaces across our hospitals—a quiet, shared moment of remembrance.

Her light shines on in how we care for one another. đź’ś

For Meghan, Medical Radiation Technologist, and the Diagnostic Imaging (DI) team at Quinte Health’s Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital (PECMH), the new hospital is going to provide an opportunity to enhance care, improve patient experience and better support the care teams across the hospital.

Working in DI, Meghan sees how the right space and tools shape care every day. In mammography especially, ongoing advances in technology help strengthen early detection, something that feels deeply personal as more people in her life and community are affected by breast cancer.

“I’m in my 40s, my friends are in their 40s, and it just feels more prevalent now,” she shared. “I know so many women in the community who have had breast cancer, so I’m really looking forward to the new mammography unit space and the newer technology.”

The addition of a new mammography machine, along with advanced imaging technology like CT—supported by generous donations through the PECMH Foundation—will help bring care closer to home, reducing the need for patients to travel outside the community for care.

The day-to-day experience of both patients and staff will also improve in the new hospital.

“Even small things will help. Right now, for example, our X-ray room floor isn’t level. When you’re trying to position a stretcher, you have to be extra careful because there’s a chance the stretcher could roll. Having larger rooms and more space to move equipment, particularly in situations like trauma, will make a big difference.”

Team members like Meghan have been able to give their feedback throughout the PECMH build project.

“I think it’s helpful when staff are asked for input because we know what we need day to day. For example, in mammography, we’ve been able to give input on things like where machines are placed, having a curtain so patients can change in privacy, and storage for equipment. Small details, but they really matter.”
