That’s why we created the Resilient Teens Creative Therapy Group.

✨ express themselves creatively
✨ build confidence and coping skills
✨ connect with others
✨ explore emotions in healthy ways
✨ feel seen, heard, and supported

Through guided art therapy experiences, mindfulness, and connection, teens are encouraged to explore who they are in an environment free of pressure or perfection.

When someone snaps, loses patience quickly, or feels like their emotions go from zero to one hundred — the first assumption is usually that they have an anger problem.

But anger is rarely the root issue.

What’s actually happening is their nervous system has learned to react quickly to threat.
Before there’s time to think, the body is already responding.
Heart rate up.
Muscles tight.
Patience gone.

This pattern often developed for a very good reason — and usually a long time ago.

The challenge is that once the nervous system learns to activate quickly, it does it automatically.

In traffic.
In parenting moments.
In relationships.
In situations that aren’t actually dangerous — but feel that way to the body.

This is the level the work happens on.

Not just managing reactions.
Not just talking through what happened.
But helping your system build enough safety and capacity that it doesn’t have to fire so fast —
so there’s a moment of choice before your body takes over.

That’s what healing actually looks like.

Not just understanding why you react the way you do —
but feeling it shift in real life.

If you’ve sat in therapy, done the work, and still feel like something won’t shift — this is for you.

Insight matters.
Understanding your patterns, your history, your triggers — that’s real work.

But a lot of what keeps people stuck isn’t in their thinking.
It’s in their nervous system.

In responses that happen faster than thought.
In a body that learned to protect itself — and hasn’t been shown it’s safe to do anything different yet.

That doesn’t mean the work hasn’t helped.
It just means there may be another layer to it.

At Valley Art Therapy, we work with the whole person — not just what you can put into words.
And for many people, that’s where things start to shift.

If this resonates, you can reach out for a consult.
You don’t have to have it all figured out first.

Parents aren’t just managing their child’s big emotions. They’re managing their own at the same time.

Here’s what’s actually happening underneath the big behaviours.

When kids feel overwhelmed or out of control, their nervous system moves into protection.

It can look like:

Fighting — yelling, hitting, arguing, defiance
Fleeing — avoiding, refusing, needing space
Freezing — going blank, not responding, “I don’t know”

These aren’t behaviour problems.
They’re nervous system responses.

And the hard part is — your nervous system responds too.

When your child is overwhelmed, your body feels it.
Staying calm isn’t just something you decide.
It’s something your system has to be able to access in that moment.

This is the work.
And it’s something we build, over time.

Follow along for more on nervous system health for kids, teens, and the parents raising them.

If you’re ready for support with this, we’d be glad to connect.
