This video by After Skool and Gabor Mate discusses how trauma is one of the reasons for addiction. In this video, addiction is any behaviour that impacts the individual’s ability to live out their day to day. This can include substances, gambling, food, p**n, internet, work, etc.
Gabor Mate explains how an individual has two fundamental needs, attachment and authenticity and an individual that does not have both of these things at the same time experience trauma. “Trauma is not what happens to you, the trauma is what happens inside of you.”
“Addiction is not the primary problem; it is an attempt to solve a problem.”
“Addiction is an attempt to deal with childhood trauma.”
