When the movement ends, there’s still something to practice.
It’s easy to think of Savasana as the few minutes after the “real” yoga. But learning to release effort while remaining present is a practice of its own.
Throughout class, we engage our muscles, direct our attention and explore different shapes. In Savasana, the invitation changes. We allow the body to be supported. We notice where we’re still holding on. We give the breath room to move without needing to control it.
It isn’t about forcing your mind to go quiet or trying to feel a certain way. Your thoughts may wander. Stillness may feel unfamiliar. That doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong. You can notice what’s there and gently return, without turning rest into another thing to get right.
This is why Savasana deserves a place in our practice, not just whatever time is left over. Yoga gives us opportunities to build strength and explore effort, but also to practice softening that effort with awareness.
Next time you’re on your mat, make a little room for both. Find a comfortable position, take the support you need, and let these final moments matter too.
