Seven ways to practice self care!
Social media these days have been filled with daily posts about which food we should avoid and which one we should always have, but too much of something is as unhealthy as having too less of something. It doesn’t help that a lot of those posts aren’t backed with factual information because each body is different from each other. Consult your doctor, don’t be afraid to ask questions, speak up for yourself, and seek out more information about your health. Don’t just trust random websites with popup ads every time you press/click on something. Like what my college professor said, use the second page of Google and not just the first page of answers!
With the rise of social media usage among generations, it is now becoming a norm to talk about mental health. It is undeniable that having a stable mental health provides such a healthy life. Being self-aware on how to manage and control your mental health is a strength not a lot of people can do. Knowing such allows you to improve or act on areas you feel like lacking or feel like overdoing. You can measure your mental health status by learning about your family and genetic health history, stress levels, sleep profile, and hygiene. There are more ways to measure this but these can help you start. Remember, mental health is not something to be ashamed about, everyone is going through something they can’t talk about.
Have you ever seen people on TikTok mention mental health walk? Well, there have been studies showing that exercising or even doing any regular moderate physical activity can help not just with your overall fitness, but also with your mood. The gym is not the only place you can exercise—taking out your garbage at night could be a form of exercise, walking to your bus stop is also an exercise, or even random house chores you’ve been procrastinating can be considered as a physical activity. Move your body, don’t stay still! Doing a simple walk for an hour or two can get you a long mile in terms of your health. It is never too late to start.
Eating healthy has been taught to us since we were kids. Eat vegetables! Eat fruits! Avoid sweets! Avoid fatty food! But every body has different body types and needs. Some people need a lot of red meat and some needs to avoid certain fruits. It is important to consult your doctor or your local pharmacist or a registered dietician to understand which nutrients your body needs because a simple google search might cause you more harm than good. You can always improve your diet by understanding and listening to your body.
Self-care also includes knowing and avoiding risks and mitigating possible outcomes. By risks, it means, avoid smoking/vaping, avoid having unprotected s*x, avoid not wearing helmets and seatbelts when driving a car or riding a bicycle. Although, it is hard to stop smoking if you’ve started but there are different smoking cessation available over the counter and prescription medications (just consult your doctor or your local pharmacist). Other than avoiding, you can also drink alcohol in moderation as part of mitigating risks. If travelling, it’s better to research the place you’re going to and it’s health risks or you can come in the clinic and ask one of our doctors to help you prepare with prescribed medications and vaccines to prevent a more higher risk of exposing yourself to health dangers. Other than this, you should do a more thorough research of different health dangers rather than listening to just one source. Remember, published journals have multiple sources, so don’t sell yourself short by only having one source.
Sanitation of oneself is an important factor to a good hygiene for good health. It’s not just you showering or taking a bath every day or putting on some deodorant, but it also applies to your surroundings. Have a dedicated day to do a deep clean in your home, have proper trash bins, and wash your hands thoroughly. Although, these are only a few to avoid spreading possible virus or bacteria when other people comes into contact with you or anything you’ve held. Fridge and freezer items must be stored properly as well! According to the International Self-Care Foundation, approximately 2 million people die from diarrheal illnesses annually. Other than storage, there are circumstances we can’t control, such as product recalls. The government post recalled products on their website both in English and French. The pharmacy can also be of help as we sell oral hygiene products, hair care and skin products, and daily hygiene products. Just ask anyone and they will be glad to help you.
It’s undeniable how most of us take our health seriously, a few people are more inclined to do more exercise, whilst there are a few people who takes multivitamins other than their prescription medications—there are people who also take natural health products. A few of us also have devices to track our blood pressure and sugar levels. However, it is also undeniable that there are some people who go overwound with the idea of self-medicating, which isn’t wrong but technically, sometimes, it could lead to more danger. If you want to start taking any over the counter medications, you can definitely ask your doctor or even visit the pharmacy to consult with the pharmacist. However, if you already take one and ran out, the pharmacy would also have them, such as vitamin D3, turmeric, and vitamin C, just ask one of our employees and we will show you where to find them.
