A relationship doesn’t have to be abusive or highly conflictual to impact postpartum mental health.
Sometimes the strain is much quieter.
It can be carrying the mental load and feeling like no one notices. Having to repeatedly ask for help. Feeling like your need for rest is less important. Having your boundaries undermined. Hearing seemingly small comments about the house, your body, parenting or exhaustion when you’re already depleted.
Our relationships can also be protective.
Feeling seen, sharing the mental load, protecting each other’s rest, supporting boundaries, checking in with genuine curiosity or recognizing what each person has taken on, given up and is carrying.
Perinatal mental health doesn’t exist in a vacuum. The support and relationships around a person matter too.
This is part of why I created Beyond Birth: The Emotional and Relational Transition to Parenthood, a virtual workshop for expectant and new parents exploring the emotional realities of becoming parents, identity shifts, mental load, relationships and how we can better support one another through the transition.
