Helping Your Child With Additional Support Needs Prepare for the Return to School 🎒❤️
The return to school can be an exciting time, but for children with additional support needs, the transition can sometimes bring extra challenges.
A little preparation and the right support can make a big difference.
📅 Re-establish routines — Gradually return to regular bedtimes, wake-up times, meals, and morning routines before school starts.
🏫 Prepare for the school environment — Talk about teachers, classmates, transportation, schedules, and any changes from the previous year. If possible, visit the school or classroom beforehand.
💬 Talk about their concerns — Encourage your child to share their worries and reassure them that it's okay to feel nervous about returning to school.
🤝 Work with the school — Communicate with teachers, support staff, and administration about your child's strengths, challenges, and the strategies that help them succeed.
🌟 Celebrate small successes — Getting through the morning routine, making it through the first day, or simply trying something new are all accomplishments worth recognizing.
❤️ Be patient — Every child adjusts at their own pace. Providing patience, encouragement, and reassurance can help build confidence and make the transition more positive.
For families of children with disabilities, it's also worth knowing that additional supports and financial benefits may be available. The Disability Tax Credit (DTC) can provide significant tax savings for eligible Canadians and may also open the door to other government benefits.
