Am I dysregulated, or just having a hard day? The struggle is real and the question is real too how do you tell the difference?.... Here's a few ways that may help in noticing.
A hard day can feel something like this: you’re tired, annoyed, maybe teary eyed. Little things can get on your nerves, you don’t really feel like talking, and you might just want to get home, put on comfy clothes, and call it a day. Maybe you’re overthinking something that happened, feeling more sensitive than usual, or just feeling drained. But you can still think straight. You know why you’re feeling the way you do, you can still laugh at something funny, enjoy a moment with your kids, or feel better after talking to someone. The day feels hard, but you still feel like you and you know tomorrow is a different day.
Dysregulation can feel different.
Your nervous system may be reacting faster than your thinking brain can keep up.
Suddenly everything feels urgent. Someone driving too slowly makes you furious. The kids are too loud and you snap because you need the noise to STOP.
Or maybe you go the other direction. You freeze. You shut down. Your energy drops. Your mind spirals while your body feels stuck.
Most of us have experienced both.
So… now what? Information is helpful, but eventually we need something we can actually do.
Start small.
Regulation comes first.
Take a breath. Unclench your jaw. Drop your shoulders. Soften the muscles you’re holding tight.
The first step often isn’t changing the thought. It’s helping your body settle enough that thinking becomes a little easier.
And you may already do some of these things you just might not do them consistently yet.
Regulation is a skill, and skills are built through repetition.
Regulate first. Then respond.
