The structure is built. The secondary steel and framing is detailed. Now it’s time for the building to start looking like a building.

This is the wall cladding phase.

Wall Cladding refers to the corrugated metal sheets, IMP panels and various other composite panels that get installed on the walls and of the structure. These panels are the outer skin of the building, they’re what protects everything inside from the elements, contributes to the building’s insulation performance, provides greater bracing, stability to the structure and gives it that clean, finished look.

Installation is precision work. Panels are staged on the ground, lifted into position by hand (or various material handling units) and fastened in sequence; one panel at a time, one bay at a time, to ensure alignment and weathertight coverage across the entire wall system.

In this photo you can see exactly where we are in the process; one side panelled and complete, the other side framed and ready. The transformation happens fast once cladding begins.

The primary frame is up but before any panels go on, there’s a critical layer of work that holds everything together.

Enter: girts and purlins.

Girts run horizontally along the walls. Purlins run across the roof. Together, they form the secondary framing system and they do a lot more than just give us a surface to attach panels to.

They transfer wind and roof loads to the main frames. They brace the columns and rafters to prevent buckling. They are the connective tissue that turns individual frames into one unified, resilient structure.

No girts. No purlins. No building.

Once secondary framing is complete, the skeleton is fully connected and ready for the next phase. 👀

Last week we discussed what happens during a shakeout, this week we’re going to talk about when we start to erect the structure. Once the shake out is complete and every piece is accounted for, the real magic begins. 🏗️

The tapered columns go up first, these are the backbone of the entire structure. Once they’re plumbed, squared, and secured, the crane or hoisting machine (tele-handler pictured) starts lifting the rafter sections into place, connecting column to column and forming the structure of the building.

What you’re seeing in this photo is exactly that. A rafter section being raised and guided into position while our installers work from the manlift to bolt up the connection. Every connection matters. Every lift counts.

This is where a steel building starts to take shape. 🔩⬆️

Q2 meeting is behind us and we’re heading into the summer strong. 🙌

We covered a lot of ground; summer safety, highlights from recent jobs, lessons learned, and a look at what’s ahead.

What matters most to us is that every person in that room had a voice. We heard from our Owner, Foremen, and Operations with an open floor for all to participate. That kind of culture doesn’t happen by accident, and we don’t take it for granted.

Looking forward to a great summer with the best team 💪

At first glance this may look messy, but there actually is a strategy behind it.

Before a single column goes vertical, our crew does what’s called a shakeout, laying out every metal piece in the order it needs to be erected. It’s the behind-the-scenes work most people never see, and it’s what keeps a job running on time and on budget.

This is the craft. 🔩
