Hi everyone,

As you may or may not know, mom had her 6 month follow up with the transplant team Wednesday in Toronto. I have been vague as to how the appointment went as it was confusing and didn’t seem all that positive. Mom is very weak and has a hard time walking which is causing her to have several falls, more than I think I am being told about. We saw Dr.Selzner who is one of the transplant doctors. Dr. Selzner stated that mom needed to have a CT scan and then asked about the EEG mom had. She stated she couldn’t find the results, which I told her I specifically asked for it to be sent to the transplant team. The note she found stated it was inconclusive, and that she needed to have another one. This EEG was done when we thought she had that seizure last year. Dr. Selzner was very concerned on the rapid decline in mom and during her exam, she lifted moms shirt to examine her stomach then said “oh dear,” asked for mom to be weighed and then walked away. I was confused as I didn’t have any answers and asked her assistant if she was coming back as I wanted to talk to her. She came back and stated that she was trying to get a surgeon to come in to see her, but I stated we had limited time due to the train. I asked if she wanted me to see if I could get a later train but she said no because all the surgeons were in the OR anyways. I asked if mom was still having the surgery on the 27th in which she stated she didn’t know anything about the surgery. She assured us that she would be in contact with us in the next few days.

Today I heard from Dr.Selzner and she stated that it was determined that mom is too frail and too thin as her BMI is low. She stated that if mom were to have the surgery the outcome wouldn’t be good and in recovery she would be on breathing tubes and it would affect the kidneys (Kidney levels are high.)
The doctor said that mom is still on the transplant list but she needs to gain weight and work on her strength. She put in a referral for the prehabilitation program, which we got a call about yesterday. That is for exercises to help strengthen mom up. I asked if the live donor is going to the next person in which she replied that they are still testing the live donor and for now they aren’t donating to anyone. Not sure if they are saving that live donor for mom or what.

This is very heartbreaking news as not once but twice now we have been told mom was getting a live donor. The only sad thing is we were actually given a date this time. Please keep mom in your thoughts and prayers that she can gain some weight to get this surgery.
Thank you for all the love and support through this 💕

Hi everyone,

So I have some very good news. Today I got a call from mom’s nurse Cheryl from the transplant team. Mom has a live donor and she is selected as the prime recipient. We even got a date this time, so it is pretty much a go. Cheryl said that mom will need an updated CT scan, but is very confident with all the bloodwork that it is a go. I was told that mom would check into the hospital Sunday.July.26/26 and her surgery is Monday.July.27/26.

I can’t believe it!!!! Mom is so excited but nervous obviously. This is needed as mom is very weak and has lost more weight.

Send positive vibes or pray if that is your thing

THANK YOU! THANK YOU!THANK YOU! To all you amazing people who have taken the time to share mom’s story. I don’t know if it was someone who came froward from the post’s or someone who was waiting to donate. Regardless the love and support everyone has shown is amazing ❤️❤️🥰

Hi everyone,

I want to welcome the new followers and thank you for joining.
My apologies for being quiet on here as times have been busy.
Just a bit of an update on mom. She seems to be on a decline again with being very weak and has lost even more weight due to not eating well. She does have glucerna but I don’t think she is taking as much as she should (3-4 times a day.) Mom has her in person appointment with the transplant team in Toronto on July 15. She goes for these appointments every 6 months. I will keep you posted after we see the doctors.

Thank you again for the wonderful support and the sharing of mom’s page and the appeal.

Happy Canada day

*** UPDATE ***

In case you missed the post yesterday, mom was taken to the hospital due to very high blood sugar levels

Hi,

I just got off the phone with mom's doctor who just saw her right before calling me. He stated that mom was confused and she didn't know where she was and was asking for me. He stated that she has mild Hepatic encephalopathy.
Hepatic encephalopathy is when the toxins and ammonia build up in the brain due to the liver not being able to filter them properly. With mom it causes confusion to the point that she doesn’t know where she is or who anyone is, even me her daughter. It’s very hard to watch when she is like this.
The doctor said that he isn't worried about
The blood sugar because it's easily managed but stated that mom has a pretty bad case of diabetes. She will be on insulin to control it as he agreed metformin is not a good medication for mom because of her liver. He asked about her cognitive state, so I told him that she has no concept of time and mom even told the doctor she had a dentist appointment to get to. He will see mom first thing in the morning and we will talk more about it. As for the urine sample it looked clean but a lot of glucose in it. They are waiting for the culture to come back to see if anything grew.

Thank you beautiful people for getting the word out and sharing ❤️❤️

***** UPDATE 2 *****

We found out today that mom is too thin and weak to have the surgery. She is still on the transplant list, but she needs to get stronger and put on some weight.

**** UPDATE ****

****** PLEASE SHARE ******

My name is Megan, and my remarkable mom, Cindy Byron, needs a living liver donor with A+,A- or O+, O- blood types to donate at Toronto General Hospital to save her life.

Cindy lives in Brockville Ontario and is a 68 year old mother of two and grandmother who has level 4 decompensation/end stage non alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver. This Cirrhosis is a bit different than normal cirrhosis as it was brought on by a metabolic syndrome which caused fatty liver that turned into cirrhosis. Cindy loved her job of being a Personal Support worker and worked in that field for over 20+ years, but sadly had to retire earlier than she wanted due to her health. Cindy was a woman who was always on the go whether it was for work, being out with family or friends. Since she has been sick, she is has been mainly home based, with difficult access due to there being no elevator in her building. Cindy loves to go for drives to see the swans and spending time with family and friends. Sadly she isn’t able to do this at the moment with her health. Cindy’s goals after transplant are to simply enjoy her life with her family. She wants to thrive in her retirement as she has not yet been able to enjoy retirement life due to her illness. Simple things such as to drive again would mean the world to her. She wants to be able to watch her family grow old and enjoy life together.

For a person diagnosed with cirrhosis/liver disease there is a long difficult wait for a deceased donor. Sadly, some patients will die waiting for one. Every three days a person dies in Ontario because they don’t get their life saving transplant.

Living liver donation is when a live person donates a portion of their liver. A living donor’s liver regenerates in approximately 6 weeks. People who are eligible for a living liver donation are people between the ages of 16-60 years old, have no major health issues- no diabetes, heart disease, active cancer, and a healthy weight for height. In finding a living donor, my mom will be removed from the deceased donor list, making the wait list for someone else in need. The living donor will be saving TWO lives: my mom’s and another person on the waiting list.

If you are interested in applying please go to https://validated.redcap.uhn.ca/surveys/?s=XN77YAKLJTT7K4EA and complete the 14 page health history form. You will need proof of your blood type.

If you have questions about living liver donation, please contact the Centre for Living Organ Donation at UHN at 416-340-5400 [email protected]

A living liver donor would save her life and change her world tremendously.

Thank you

WELCOME FOLLOWERS:

Hi my name is Megan and this page is for my mom and hopefully finding her a living liver donor. All we ask is that you share the pinned post which is the appeal for potentially finding a live donor. I was going to be mom’s live donor, but got denied due to my weight. Trying to loose weight is incredibly hard.

First off I want to thank all who is following the page and sharing the post. We are beyond thankful for this ❤️

We are pretty private people, so this will definitely be different but I will do my best to do updates as best I can.

Currently mom is admitted to the hospital due to high blood sugar levels.
She is pretty tired, but is alert and knows who we are and where she is which is a very good sign.

Since mom got really sick in May 2024, she has been in and out of the hospital and to be honest I have lost track of the amount of times. She does really good after being in the hospital until she isn’t. It breaks my heart watching her go through this time and time again. It’s so hard watching a loved one who is sick, so hold your loved ones tight, take those pictures and make those memories because life is short.

We again wanted to thank all you beautiful people for sharing this page and the appeal to help mom out. We can’t thank you enough. Sending love to all ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
