Courage doesn't always feel courageous.
Sometimes it looks like taking the next step with shaky knees.
Making the phone call.
Starting the project.
Having the difficult conversation.
Trusting yourself enough to begin.
We often imagine courage as the absence of fear.
But what if courage is moving forward even when you can't yet see the shore?

The monarch butterfly doesn't wait until conditions are perfect before beginning its migration. At times, she flies over vast stretches of water with no land in sight.
She simply keeps going.
Perhaps that's all we are being asked to do today.
One step.
One choice.
One wingbeat.

The part we don't talk about.

The seed beneath the soil. The caterpillar inside the chrysalis. The dream that hasn't arrived yet.

So much of life happens in the unseen middle.

It's the part where we get tired. The part where we wonder if anything is changing. The part where we feel discouraged and think about giving up.

Yet often the greatest transformation is taking place beneath the surface.

If you're in the middle part right now, keep going.

Trust the process.

Something beautiful may be unfolding that you cannot yet see.

As graduation season approaches, I’ve been reflecting on how transitions shape us — not only academically, but emotionally and personally.

Whether students are leaving elementary school, graduating from high school, or completing post-secondary education, they are stepping beyond what is familiar and into uncertainty.

And uncertainty almost always brings fear.

Yet growth rarely happens inside comfort zones.

In my newly released book, I Can Do It Afraid, I explore the idea that courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is the willingness to move forward despite it.

Without fear, there is no courage.
And courage is what builds resilience.

I believe many graduates are standing at that threshold right now.

Perhaps what young people need most is not pressure to have everything figured out, but encouragement to trust themselves enough to begin.

Every new beginning comes with uncertainty.

As graduation season approaches, I’ve been reflecting on how transitions shape us — not only academically, but emotionally and personally.

Whether students are leaving kindergarten or elementary school, graduating from high school, or completing post-secondary education, they are stepping beyond what is familiar and into uncertainty.

And uncertainty almost always brings fear.

Yet growth rarely happens inside comfort zones.

One of the themes I explore in I Can Do It Afraid is that courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is the willingness to move forward despite it.

The monarch butterfly migration became a powerful metaphor for me while writing this book. These butterflies begin an extraordinary journey without guarantees, guided only by an inner instinct to move toward what they are becoming.

I believe many graduates are standing at that same threshold right now.

Perhaps what young people need most is not pressure to have everything figured out, but encouragement to trust themselves enough to begin.

Today, I have the privilege of sharing I Can Do It Afraid with women connected to a Regina shelter supporting those leaving domestic violence.
One of the deepest messages within this book is that courage does not always look loud or fearless.
Sometimes courage looks like:
• making a life-changing decision
• walking into the unknown
• choosing yourself again
• refusing to collapse back into what no longer feels safe or true
Fear often tells us to stay where things are familiar — even when they hurt.
But healing begins the moment we take one small brave step toward a different future.
It is an honour to hold space for conversations like these and to remind others that fear does not mean we cannot move forward.
Without fear, there is no courage.

I’ll be at Indigo Regina this Friday for a signing of I Can Do It Afraid, and I would love to see you there.

I Can Do It Afraid is a story about courage, resilience, and moving forward even when fear is present. Written to support meaningful conversations with children and youth around fear, change, emotional well-being, and bravery, the book also includes a special reflection section designed to encourage “brave conversations” between children and the adults supporting them.

Fear is something we all experience, and courage, regardless of our age, is something we continue learning one brave step at a time.

This week feels especially meaningful as I prepare to travel to Regina and finally meet my publisher, Heather Nickel of Your Nickel’s Worth Publishing, in person.
What began as a simple idea — stories about courage, resilience, and possibility — has now grown into opportunities to connect with communities across Saskatchewan in ways I never could have imagined.
I am deeply grateful for the people who believe in these books and help bring them into the world. Publishing is never a journey taken alone. Behind every book are individuals and communities offering encouragement, creativity, support, and belief along the way.
As an author, moments like these feel worth pausing for.
One brave step at a time.

After a couple of weeks on the road sharing I Can Do It Afraid across Saskatchewan, I’m heading home with a full heart.

This tour brought school presentations, library visits, conversations with parents and support workers, new opportunities, sold-out books, and so many reminders that courage grows in community.

One of the most beautiful parts has been hearing adults say:
“This message is not only for children… we needed it too.”

And maybe that’s true for all of us.

Fear doesn’t disappear because we grow older.
But courage grows every time we take one more step forward anyway.

Thank you to everyone who opened doors, shared conversations, purchased books, invited me into your schools and organizations, and reminded me why stories matter.

Onward… one brave step at a time. 🦋

even while fear is still present.
That’s the heart of I Can Do It Afraid.
Inspired by the monarch butterfly’s 3,000-mile journey, it’s a gentle reminder that we don’t have to wait until we feel ready to begin.
