Healing from the survival responses ingrained in your body is not a linear journey. I believe in being candid with those I work with during our sessions. You will experience progress, yet there will be moments of struggle when these familiar patterns resurface. This time, however, you won’t be able to ignore them. Engaging in the healing process means confronting the very survival mechanisms that once enabled you to endure. As the saying goes, “ignorance is bliss.”
The key distinction lies in the active work you will undertake. You will learn to regulate your emotional responses and explore your attachment styles, as well as your survival responses—be it fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. You will gain insight into how many of your reactions stem from patterns established in early childhood. Understanding the origins and contexts of these responses is crucial, but then what?
The cycle may repeat itself—it’s entrenched in your brain, a deeply ingrained roadmap 🗺️.
The pivotal difference between your past and present is this: you are now empowered to make different choices. It ultimately boils down to choice. Why is this significant? Because, during those formative experiences, choice was stripped away. You had no voice, no agency in the matter. Traumatic events and neglect are not decisions we make; however, healing from them can be a conscious choice.
