“I don’t need help.” We hear this a lot, and it usually comes from fear, not stubbornness. Fear of losing independence. Fear of being a burden. Fear of what it means to need care.
A few things that can help:
* Share a specific observation, not a general worry (“I noticed the stove was left on” vs. “You’re not managing well”)
* Ask open questions: “How are you finding the stairs lately?” invites conversation, not defensiveness
* Reframe help as connection: extra support can mean more good time together, not less independence
* Start small: one visit a week feels very different than “full-time care”
These conversations take patience. You don’t have to have all the answers today.
