I like work friends 🤷🏼‍♀️.

Let’s be kind out there. There are more than enough sick patients and more than enough evidence that we all belong in the treatment plan. We can play together.

As the tunnel we were standing in filled up with water, I thought to myself

"Well s**t. Hopefully they don't hate me after this..."

I took a group of 13 clinicians to Greece last year, and on a hike in a fortress, we got stuck in the craziest storm, trapped in a tunnel, pressed up against the wall while Daniel Craig's James Bond film crew (not joking) drove by. There was not an inch between us and the cars as the water washed over our ankles, then calves...

These are the moments that create forever bonds?

It turns out they are.

The women that say yes to these trips aren't always in my inner circle before we fly across the world. Some of them had taken programs previously. Some were in an active program and some just said "why not?" and joined us in Greece.

We all came home in one very wet piece, with ideas, leadership levers to pull and new working relationships that have created so much momentum and growth in their businesses.

It wasn't planned. It was actually scary (especially as the host...) and ancient evestrophing is still pretty neat in my books.

My next adventure is in Peru in May 2027. I have room for a few more women.

Every time someone preceptored in my practice, they would say the same thing:

"You don't really prescribe a lot in your appointments...it's mostly just talking."

It was mostly talking because that's what people need to change their health.

Mostly talking.

We send practitioners to school to learn protocols, lists, algorithms.

(I've even built a company that will do that part for you.)

But the "mostly talking" is where real change happens.

It's also the part of your job that won't be replaced by a computer.

Our communications course launching this fall is a core requirement for our TCC certification pathway that will elevate your status and practice in the community of practitioners. It's a 5-week, daily practice program that will completely transform how you show up in your patient visits.

Send me a DM if you want to be flagged for the waitlist.

Remember making the joke about pharma paying for cruises?

We're not much better (even though I've yet to go on a cruise).

Every single continuing education opportunity for NDs in North America is sponsored by supplement companies. The schools are partially funded by industry. Your conference tickets are heavily subsidized by industry (and I've paid to be part of that system too).

I love the companies that support NDs. I love supplement companies that work towards higher-quality products and research standards than we've had in the past. They absolutely should train you on their products.

But when we hide the intent behind a "how to treat asthma" webinar, we've lost the plot.

Our guidelines and care frameworks should come from us.

We should drive the industry, not the other way around.

If your patient can't hear your voice saying, "That's not a thing," you're still vs the internet.

You're not the authority.

Integrative medicine has "mildly entertained" almost every treatment option out there, without putting our foot down, saying "this doesn't work (even though we thought it did)" or "that doesn't have enough evidence to use it."

Practitioners are harmed by this too, not just patients.

Without a solid footing or standards, every practitioner mildly recommends things. They mildly skirt around effect size and the lack of effect of homeopathy. They have trouble saying:

"No Julie, that's not a thing."

When you can't do that confidently, your patient goes home and compares your recommendations to Bob's health blog and ChatGPT.

Guidelines free us. They tell you what the best thing is, and they ALSO tell you what isn't.

Julie wins. You win.

We're all free.

I start by crying.

Because of course.

Many times in my career, the same people who have told me I'm the "greatest leader to ever lead" have also told me I'm scum of the earth, am selfish and self-centred, and that I am secretly trying to limit their success.

What caused the massive switch in opinion?

We disagreed about something. Usually, it was something relatively small.

When relationships can't survive a difference of opinion, it doesn't really say much about your capability as a leader. But man, it certainly can make it feel that way.

I am a great leader. You probably are too. Someone disagreeing with your opinion or decisions doesn't automatically make you a bad leader. Leadership is reflected in overall culture, performance, autonomy, ownership, and commitment.

Leadership isn't about one opinion or decision.

And real leaders are willing to discuss differences of opinion and stand by their decisions if they're still the right choice.

Even if it means being disliked (or worse).

Why Peru?

I spent a considerable amount of my career alone, in my office (or bed office), building things for other people to use. Patients, students and clinicians. I'd create and ship. Create and ship.

I'm good at building things.

In 2020, I left my office and joined my first group program to help myself grow as a business owner and leader. Since then, I've been in multiple masterminds (5) and have travelled all over the world (Switzerland, Greece, Costa Rica (x2), New Orleans, California, BC, Chicago, Boston... the list goes on).

What I know for sure is that I wouldn't be the person I am today if I didn't leave the house.

Building alone, without ever looking up, wasn't going to get me here.

I started hosting retreats for leaders and health care business owners 2 years ago. They are an incredible way to have an immersive week and to see what it's like to be inside a bigger group program or mastermind. You don't have to be in my mastermind to join us in Peru. It's a 1-off opportunity to put yourself in the room (or on the mountain) with people doing cool things who will lift you up and send you home a different version of yourself.

If you want the links and more information, send me a DM. I'd love it if you came with us.
