So, what is ARFID?

Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder is often mistaken for “picky eating” but is so much deeper than that.

Unlike some other eating disorders, ARFID isn’t typically driven by concerns about weight, shape, or appearance.

Instead, food avoidance may be connected to 3 main experiences. (SWIPE to read)

ARFID only became an official diagnosis in 2013. We are still learning a lot as a community of helpers 💛

Food refusal isn’t always about being “picky” or difficult.

Sometimes a child is responding to a food that feels genuinely overwhelming the texture, smell, taste, temperature, unpredictability, or even the fear of what might happen after eating it.

For children with sensory sensitivities, ADHD, autism, anxiety, or ARFID, avoiding food can be a way of trying to feel safe.

Instead of asking, “How do we get them to just eat it?” we can get curious:

“What is making this food feel hard right now?”

Understanding what’s underneath the refusal can help us approach food with less pressure, more curiosity, and support that actually meets the child where they are.

Listen I’ve been there too. We can spend years chasing confidence through changing our bodies and still feel unhappy.

Feeling better about our bodies is often not about learning to love every inch of ourselves, but learning how to move with the constant changing and aging of our bodies - to appreciate our bodies like seasons - knowing more changes are around the corner. (Like my creaky joints)

It’s about holding compassion for our bodies ability today or its desired rest tomorrow.

I believe confidence comes from walking in who you are, your values, beliefs, and how you show up…

Try to remember… no one ever said “we loved her because she was skinny/beautiful/toned

They loved her because she was funny, thoughtful, compassionate, vivacious, friendly, kind.

How do you think about the people you love? What makes you love them?
What would it be like to connect with those values over focusing on your appearance?

Most body comparison isn’t about appearance, sometimes it’s the desire of confidence, belonging, acceptance, worthiness we feel we are witnessing as we observe another person.

Often our bodies can become a symbol of something we feel we are lacking.

The question to ponder might be “what do I believe their body gives them that mine doesn’t?”

Rather than, “why don’t I look like them?”

“Finish your vegetables and you can have dessert”

Think about the message….
vegetable = chore, dessert = prize (fun)

Children can learn that some foods are virtuous and others are special, forbidden, or worth eating.

The problem is what we restrict often becomes exciting and what we put pressure on becomes less appealing.

Food doesn’t need a moral ranking system, we can help children learn that different foods serve different purposes:

Some foods provide quick energy
Some foods provide lasting energy
Some foods bring joy
Many foods do more than one thing

Food is nourishment for the mind, body, and soul. It is not a measure of character.
